Second ranked Indianapolis too much for Lady Miners

Rolla, Mo. – The Missouri S&T Lady Miners dropped a pair of contests to the second ranked Indianapolis Greyhounds 10-0 in five innings and 11-1 on Saturday afternoon at the S&T Softball Field. S&T's offense was held to just four hits in the doubleheader.

Game 1 – Indianapolis 10 Lady Miners 0
The Greyhounds (21-0, 6-0 GLVC) sent 11 batters to the plate in the top of the first inning scoring six runs on four hits. Five of the six runs were scored with two outs. Natalie Lalich started the scoring with a groundout to second scoring Katie Kelly. Emma Varsberg singled to plate another run, Jenny Thompson came into score on a wild pitch with the bases loaded. Brooke Riess followed with a double to right center to make it 5-0. After a walk, Kelly picked up her second hit of the inning with a single to third scoring the sixth run.

The Lady Miners (6-17, 0-6 GLVC) saw two of their first three hitters reach in the home half of the first but UIndy ace Morgan Foley got back-to-back strikeouts to end the inning. The 'Hounds added two more in the fourth on a double from Jessie Noone and a two-run homer from Lalich. Noone added a two-run double down the left field line to cap the scoring in the fifth.

Kyra Slemp (Roeland Park, Kan./Shawnee Mission East) and Kati Viets (Sweet Springs, Mo./Sweet Springs) had the lone hits off of Foley in the opener. Viets took the loss in the circle to fall to 3-9.

Game 2 – Indianapolis 11 Lady Miners 1
The second game was scoreless through three innings before Indianapolis broke through in the fourth. With two outs, Lalich reached on an error on a muffed throw at first and advanced to second as the ball got away down the right field line. Jenny Thompson followed with a double to center to score Lalich.

The 'Hounds added to their lead with another unearned run in the fifth before breaking the game open with four in the sixth on a pair of two-run homers from Thompson and Riess. UIndy added five more in the seventh getting a two-run homer from Noone and a three-run homer off the bat of Cassie Reed.

S&T scored its run in the home half of the seventh loading the bases with a walk to Savannah Fedorchak (Oakville, Mo./Oakville), a double by Cailey Baker (Plainfield, Ill./Plainfield), a walk to Viets loading the bases. After a pitching change, Kelly Heckemeyer (St. Elizabeth, Mo./St. Elizabeth) walked on a 3-2 pitch to score Rachel Aiardo (Naperville, Ill./Naperville North), running for Fedorchak, but back-to-back strikeouts ended the contest.
Baker and Weiss had the lone hits in the second game but the Lady Miners did receive four free passes from three UIndy hurlers. Courtney Jackson (Parkville, Mo./Park Hill South) took the loss in the contest going the first six innings with Ashley Rausch (Washington, Iowa/Washington) getting the final three outs.

S&T is back in action on Sunday afternoon when it takes on Saint Joseph's College in a doubleheader beginning at 12 p.m. The Pumas split their doubleheader at Drury on Saturday winning the opener 4-1 and falling in the nightcap 5-4.
