S&T drops two to Screaming Eagles

Evansville, Ind. – Missouri S&T's softball squad dropped both ends of a doubleheader to Southern Indiana 11-1 in five innings and 12-6 on Saturday afternoon at the USI Softball Field in Evansville, Ind. Andi Davis (Blue Springs, Mo./Archbishop O'Hara ) and Savannah Fedorchak (Oakville, Mo./Oakville) had three hits each in the doubleheader.

Game 1 – Southern Indiana 11 Missouri S&T 1 five innings
S&T (4-15, 0-4 GLVC) struck first in the opener scoring a run with a two-out rally in the opening frame. Kyra Slemp (Roeland Park, Kan./Shawnee Mission East) started the rally with an infield single and scored on Fedorchak's double to right center. Southern Indiana (16-8, 4-0 GLVC) answered with three runs in the home half of the first then added three in the second, three more in the third and two in the fourth.

The Lady Miners were held to six hits in the contest as Davis led the way with two hits. Kati Viets (Sweet Springs, Mo./Sweet Springs) suffered the loss allowing nine runs, eight earned, on 10 hits and walked two.

Game 2- Southern Indiana 12 Missouri S&T 6
In the backend of the doubleheader the Screaming Eagles raced out to a 7-0 lead after two innings scoring four in the first and three in the second. After holding USI scoreless the next two innings S&T erupted with a six-run fifth to climb back into the contest. With one out Hannah Franceschini (Plainfield, Ill./Plainfield Central) started the rally with a single to left then Kelly Heckemeyer (St. Elizabeth, Mo./St. Elizabeth) hit the first pitch she saw over the center field fence for her second home run of the season. Lori Badalamenti (Wentzville, Mo./Timberland ) started the rally again with a single and then back-to-back walks to Monica Weiss (St. Louis, Mo./Marquette ) and Davis loaded the bases.

Slemp drove in a run to make it 7-3 with a single to right scoring Badalamenti. After a pitching change, Fedorchak singled to center to plate another run. A walk to Morgan Imhoff (Jamestown, Mo./Jamestown) forced in another run to make it 7-5 and a groundout to second brought home Slemp with the sixth run of the inning. Franceschini then grounded out to second to end the inning. The Lady Miners sent 11 batters to the plate in the inning.

The Screaming Eagles countered with four runs in the home half of the fifth and added another in the sixth for the final margin.

S&T had seven hits in the nightcap led by Fedorchak with two. Heckemeyer had two runs batted in. Courtney Jackson (Parkville, Mo./Park Hill South) suffered the defeat allowing seven runs on four hits and issued four walks. Ashley Hill (Centralia, Mo./Centralia) went the final 4.2 innings allowing five runs on 10 hits.

The Lady Miners are back at home on Wednesday hosting Southwest Baptist in a non-conference doubleheader beginning at 2 p.m. at the S&T Softball Field. It'll be the first of three straight home doubleheaders for S&T as it'll host Indianapolis next Saturday at 12 p.m. and Saint Joseph's next Sunday at 12 p.m.
