ROLLA, Mo. – Missouri S&T was right with Southern Indiana for most of the afternoon, but couldn't slow the Screaming Eagles down the stretch as USI came away with a
94-87 Great Lakes Valley Conference win Saturday at Billy Key Court.
The Miners had a one-point lead with under 13 minutes to play and trailed 68-67 with 7:28 remaining with two chances to take the lead, but were unable to do so and the Eagles were able to pull away by scoring on 12 consecutive possessions after S&T committed a turnover on the second chance to move in front.
The teams played a nip-and-tuck first half, as neither team held a lead of more than seven. After trailing for much of the early going, S&T took its first lead of the game at 31-29 following a pair of
Danylo Zuikov (Kiev, Ukraine/LaLumiere School) free throws with 5:37 to go in the half.
Another basket by Zuikov just over two minutes later gave S&T a three-point lead before the Screaming Eagles ran off 12 of the next 14 points to take their largest lead of the half of seven. A tip-in at the buzzer by
Tyler Anderson (Lee's Summit, Mo./Lee's Summit North) cut the USI lead to five at 44-39 as the game reached halftime.
The Miners tied the score early in the second half on an alley-oop dunk by
B.J. McLaughlin (Florissant, Mo./Hazelwood Central) and a three-pointer by
Telloy Simon (Kitchener, Ont./St. Mary's), then after the Eagles got the advantage back to seven, the Miners went on a 10-2 burst to regain the lead at 58-57 on a three-pointer out of the corner by
Quinn Poythress (Jackson, Mo./Notre Dame Regional).
S&T was unable to extend the margin over the next minute, however, then Bobo Drummond scored to put USI back into the lead.
Juwan Miller (Kitchener, Ont./Huron Heights)'s lay-in with 7:28 to play brought S&T back to within a point, then the Screaming Eagles committed a turnover on the inbounds pass. The Miners missed a shot on that possession, then got another opportunity after Drummond missed a three-pointer, but Alex Stein made a steal under the basket and was fouled; he made both free throws to make it a three-point game.
Stein, a freshman, scored a career-high 26 points to lead the Screaming Eagles (15-8, 7-6 GLVC) as they shot 55.9 percent from the field on the day. USI also got 15 points from Shane Seniour and 12 off the bench from Travis Britt.
Desmond Buerge (Carthage, Mo./Carthage) led the Miners with 23 points, while McLaughlin added 17 and Poythress also reached double figures with 10. S&T shot 51.7 percent on the afternoon, with its top three scorers going a combined 18-of-30.
The Miners, who fell to 8-14 overall and 4-9 in the GLVC, head to the road for a pair of games next week beginning on Thursday when they face McKendree in a 7:30 p.m. game in Lebanon, Ill.
