Rosemont, Ill. – The Missouri S&T Lady Miners sent 10 batters to the plate scoring five times in the fifth inning breaking a 1-1 tie to defeat Ashland
6-1 on Sunday morning at the Dome at the Ballpark in Rosemont, Ill. S&T (3-10) finished the weekend winning three of its five games in the Dome.
Ashland (3-2) struck first in the bottom of the second as Bri Buckley tripled to right center and scored on Kalene Freshour's single to left field. The Eagles had a chance for more with two on and one out but
Kati Viets (Sweet Springs, Mo./Sweet Springs) got a foul out down the right field line and a fly out to center to get out of the jam.
The Lady Miners tied the game in the top of the fourth. With one out
Cailey Baker (Plainfield, Ill./Plainfield) singled deep in the hole at short and advanced to third on
Morgan Imhoff (Jamestown, Mo./Jamestown)'s double to left center.
Lori Badalamenti (Wentzville, Mo./Timberland ) then grounded one back to the pitcher and Baker was able to slide in under Buckley's tag to tie the game.
S&T tried to take the lead but
Rachel Aiardo (Naperville, Ill./Naperville North), running for Imhoff, was thrown out at the plate on a squeeze play by the pitcher.
Ashland went to the bullpen to start the fifth brining in Brittany Flanigan.
Andi Davis (Blue Springs, Mo./Archbishop O'Hara ) started the inning with a single up the middle, advanced to second a sacrifice from
Hannah Franceschini (Plainfield, Ill./Plainfield Central) and got to third on a wild pitch.
Kyra Slemp (Roeland Park, Kan./Shawnee Mission East) drove Davis in with a triple to right center. After a walk and a hit-by-pitch loaded the bases, Imhoff singled to center scoring Slemp to make it 3-1. After a strikeout,
Victoria Culbertson (Nevada, Mo./Nevada) worked a walk scoring
Courtney Jackson (Parkville, Mo./Park Hill South), running for
Kelly Heckemeyer (St. Elizabeth, Mo./St. Elizabeth), to make it 4-1.
Savannah Fedorchak (Oakville, Mo./Oakville), pinch-hitting for
Monica Weiss (St. Louis, Mo./Marquette ), lined a 2-2 pitch into the gap in left center and it bounced over the wall for a ground-rule double scoring Baker and Imhoff to make it 6-1. Davis, batting for the second time in the frame, grounded out to the pitcher to end the rally.
Viets worked around a one out infield single and a walk in the bottom of the fifth getting Sarah Alley to fly out to right and Buckley to ground into a fielder's choice as Davis stepped on the bag at second. Viets worked around a two-out single in the error in the sixth and then set the Eagles down in order in the seventh to earn her second straight win.
The Lady Miners outhit Ashland 9-6 in the contest and was led by Slemp and Imhoff with two hits each. Davis, Franceschini, Baker, Weiss and Fedorchak had a hit each. Viets threw a complete game six-hitter allowing just one run with a strikeout against four walks.
S&T is scheduled to open the home portion of its schedule against Harding on Tuesday afternoon. The doubleheader gets underway at 1 p.m.
