Tough shooting night costs Lady Miners

Lebanon, Ill. – The Missouri S&T Lady Miners were held to a season low 42 points in a 60-42 loss at McKendree on Thursday evening in Lebanon, Ill. The 42 points scored matched the season low scored against Truman State two weeks ago.

The Lady Miners (7-14, 3-11 GLVC) struggled to shoot the ball in the opening quarter hitting only 4 of 13 shots but did make three triples and trailed only 12-11 at the end of the first quarter. The Bearcats (11-13, 6-8 GLVC) opened the second quarter on a 9-0 run to extend their lead to 10 midway through the second quarter.

Jamy Douvier (Sedgwick, Kan./Sunrise Christian Academy) got the offense going hitting a jumper to stop the run and then after McKendree went back up by 10 Douvier hit back-to-back three-pointers to cut the Bearcat lead to four with 1:13 left in the half. S&T had a chance to get closer in the final minute but had a shot blocked and then turned the ball over in the closing seconds of the half.

The Lady Miners finished the first half shooting 25 percent (7-for-28) from the floor, but were 5-of-9 from downtown. Douvier finished the half with eight points while Elsie Greenwood (Breckenridge, Mo./Penney High School) added six and Raetchel Gray (Allen, Okla./Byng ) had five.

The Bearcats hit 10 of 28 shots (36 percent) but hit only 2 of 11 shots from the three-point line. They outrebounded S&T 24-to-16 in the half resulting in a 13-2 advantage in second chance points. Kelsee Ennis and Emily Pusheck led McKendree with seven points apiece while Shannon McGinnis added five points.

The Lady Miners opened the second half scoring five of the first seven points to trim the Bearcat lead to 25-24 as Bria Pierce (Overland Park, Kan./Blue Valley North) scored the first five points of the third quarter. McKendree countered that run with four straight from Pusheck to stretch the margin back to five. S&T again cut the lead to one, but the Bearcats ended the quarter on a 10-3 run to take an eight point lead into the final quarter.

The Lady Miners cut the lead to four early in the fourth quarter before the Bearcats went on a 14-0 run over a five minute stretch to build its largest lead of the game at 18 points.

S&T shot 43 percent (10-for-23) from the floor in the second half to finish the game making 17 of 51 attempts from the floor (33.3 percent). The Lady Miners shot 46 percent (6-for-13) from three but were outrebounded 40-to-28 in the contest. Douvier led S&T with 12 points while Pierce had seven and Greenwood finished with six.

McKendree shot 57 percent from the field in the second half and finished the game making 26 of 56 shots (46.4 percent). It made only 3 of 18 attempts from beyond the arc but outscored the Lady Miners 18-2 in second chance points. Pusheck had a game-high 18 points while Ennis finished with 11.

S&T returns to action on Saturday taking on Illinois Springfield at 1 p.m. in Springfield, Ill. The Prairie Stars lost to Drury 77-62 on Thursday night.
