Panthers slow Miners from floor to top S&T in GLVC contest

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. – Cold shooting plagued Missouri S&T Saturday afternoon as it dropped its second consecutive Great Lakes Valley Conference contest, as 12th-ranked Drury handed the Miners a 92-72 loss at the O'Reilly Family Events Center.

Despite having five players in double figures, Missouri S&T shot just 40 percent in the contest and wasn't able to slow down the Panthers, particularly in the second half when Drury made 19-of-31 shots from the floor.

The Miners and Panthers swapped the lead in the early minutes, with S&T holding as much as a four-point lead following a three-pointer by Jalen Myers (Shorewood, IL/Minooka).  The game was tied at 11 after Danylo Zuikov (Kiev, Ukraine/LaLumiere School)'s trey at the 13:56 mark, but the Panthers took the lead for good in the first half on John Williams' basket on their next trip down the floor.

Drury would build its lead to as much as 12 late in the first half before another three-pointer by Myers and a basket by Rokas Paulauskas (Talsiai, Lithuania/Hamilton Heights Acad.) after the Panthers scored at the other end allowed S&T to get the margin down to nine at 42-33 at the intermission.

The Miners hit just 38.2 percent of their shots in the first half while the Panthers sunk exactly one-half of their tries and forced S&T into 10 turnovers along the way.

Drury held a 10-point lead early in the second half after Tevin Foster knocked down a three-pointer, then the Miners had a pair of three-point possessions to trim the lead to four.  Myers connected on a three-pointer, then a conventional three-point play by Randy Holmes (St. Louis, MO/Soldan International Studies) at the 17:52 mark made it 45-41.

However, the Panthers got the lead back into double figures a little over three minutes later and after S&T had cut it back to eight, Drury rattled off 10 straight points midway through the half to build its advantage to 18 before Juwan Miller (Kitchener, Ont./Huron Heights) halted the run with a runner in the lane with 8:49 to go.

The closest S&T got in the final nine minutes was 15 as it fell to 7-2 overall and 1-2 in the GLVC.

Myers and Paulauskas had 12 points apiece to lead the Miners, while Holmes and Zuikov had 11 each and Dulan Scott (Chicago, IL/Farragut Academy) finished with 10.  Paulauskas finished with 12 rebounds to record his third double-double of the year and sixth of his S&T career.

Foster, who hit five of the Panthers' 11 three-point baskets, led all scorers in the game with 21 points, while John Williams added 16 for Drury as it improved to 8-0 overall and 3-0 in GLVC play.

The Miners will return to action Dec. 28 when they face Southern Illinois Edwardsville in an exhibition contest; the regular season slate resumes on New Year's Eve when S&T plays at Arkansas Tech.
