ROLLA, Mo. – Unable to get its passing game untracked Saturday afternoon, Missouri S&T suffered a
16-6 Great Lakes Valley Conference loss to Indianapolis on Senior Day at Allgood-Bailey Stadium.
The Miners connected on just eight-of-23 passes for a total of 77 yards in the contest and failed to reach the end zone in a game for the first time in over three seasons as they dropped to 4-6 on the season heading into next week's season finale at Quincy.
S&T got a solid performance from its defense Saturday, as the Greyhounds only reached the end zone once and were held to three field goals otherwise and 303 yards of total offense. However, S&T had just 222 yards in the game even as it posted 145 on the ground.
The Miners scored first in the contest, taking advantage of a 25-yard punt return by
Braxton Graham (Seneca, MO/Seneca) to get into UIndy territory. After moving to the Greyhounds' 23-yard line, Ben Styron connected on a 40-yard field goal to put S&T in front late in the first quarter.
The Greyhounds had a chance to knot the game up after Tuwan Payton returned the ensuing kickoff into Miner territory and moved the ball inside the S&T 20, but Brad Schickel pushed a 33-yard field goal attempt wide to the right. But the next time UIndy got the ball, it took the lead thanks to the arm and legs of quarterback Bryce Stancombe.
Stancombe ran 18 yards for a first down on an third-and-11 play and later completed a pass for a first down on another third down play, setting up a 25-yard touchdown pass to Malik Higgins for what turned out to be the only touchdown of the contest.
Schickel would add to the UIndy lead before halftime with a pair of field goals, one from 25 yards and another from 42 in the final minute of the half.
The Miners made it a one-score game again on their opening drive of the second half, driving to the Greyhound 20 before settling for a 38-yard field goal by Styron to make it 13-6. S&T had a chance to get even closer early in the fourth quarter, but Styron had a field goal attempt blocked to keep the Greyhounds up by seven.
After the teams traded punts, the Greyhounds drove to the Miners' one-yard line and got an 18-yard field goal from Schickel to make it a two-score game with under five minutes remaining. S&T came back down the field and reached the UIndy 23, but on fourth down,
Lamar Wilkes (Maryland Heights, MO/Pattonville) had a pass intercepted in the end zone to snuff out the Miners' last hope.
S&T got 12 tackles from
Landon Compton (Lamar, MO/Lamar) and seven apiece from
Jeremi Ross (Valencia, CA/Hollywood) and
Mickey Sarner (Murrieta, CA/Murrieta Valley) in the loss; Ross also broke up three passes on the afternoon. The Miners also recorded five quarterback sacks and had 10 tackles for a loss in the contest.
Despite being held to just two catches for 26 yards on the day, Graham – who came into the game as the GLVC leader in receptions – still accumulated 186 all-purpose yards in the game.
Charles Bournes (Chicago, IL/Morgan Park) led the S&T running game with 61 yards.
Stancombe completed 16-of-32 passes for UIndy (5-5, 4-3 GLVC), completing seven to Garrett Willis for a game-high 94 yards, while Andrew Walker had 76 of the Greyhounds' 102 yards on the ground.
Missouri S&T (4-6, 3-4 GLVC) will close its 2016 schedule with a 1 p.m. game next Saturday at Quincy University.
