S&T downs Missouri Baptist 70-47 for second straight win

Rolla, Mo. – The Missouri S&T Lady Miners picked up its second straight win defeating Missouri Baptist 70-47 on Saturday afternoon at the Bullman Multi-Purpose Building. Janie Arand (Washington, Mo./St. Francis Borgia) scored a season-high 21 points to lead the Lady Miners (3-1) while Katey Brown (Craig, Neb./Guardian Angels Central Catholic) added 10 off the bench. S&T forced 20 turnovers, 16 off of steals, in the contest which led to 22 points.

The Lady Miners scored right off the opening tip as Kim Runge (Freedom, Wis./Freedom) came away with the tip and hit Arand for a layup six seconds into the game. The Spartans (2-2) answered with five straight points to take its lone lead of the game less than a minute in. The lead was short lived as Raetchel Gray (Allen, Okla./Byng ) knocked down a three-pointer sparking a 13-3 run for S&T over the next six and a half minutes giving the Lady Miners a seven-point lead. Missouri Baptist got an old-fashioned three-point play from Trina Valencia to cut the deficit to four by the end of the quarter.

The Spartans cut the S&T lead to two points on a layup by Jordan Bruenton 1:43 into the second quarter before the Lady Miners went on a 16-2 run over the next 5:50 building their largest lead of the half at 31-15 on a basket by Joe'l Bland (St. Charles, Mo./Homeschooled). S&T 44 percent from the field in the second quarter and headed into the locker room with a 13-point advantage.

Arand led the Lady Miners with 10 points in the opening half. Brown added six while Bland, Aricca Daye (Des Moines, Iowa/Des Moines East) and Elsie Greenwood (Breckenridge, Mo./Penney High School) tallied four points each. S&T finished the half shooting 40 percent from the field and had 10 steals in the first 20 minutes.
Missouri Baptist shot only 32 percent in the first half from the floor and was led in scoring by Bruenton with six while Valencia and Briya Wilborn added three points each.

S&T scored eight of the first 13 points to open the second half extending its lead to 16 points four minutes into the frame. Arand and Gray combined to score six of those points. The lead eventually grew to 21 points late in the quarter after a pair of free throws from Bland.

The Lady Miners led by 20 points for a majority of the final quarter with the biggest leading  at 25 after a three-pointer by Jordan Kabetske (Republic, Mo./Republic) with 2:44 left in the contest. Sarah Neal (Lawton, Iowa/Lawton Bronson) got in on the scoring act as well hitting a three-pointer in front of the S&T bench with 0:03 left to conclude the scoring.

The Lady Miners finished the second half shooting 44 percent from the floor and shot the ball better from downtown making five of 12 attempts and were nine for 11 at the foul line. S&T finished the game shooting 42 percent (26-for-62) from the field, 6-of-25 from the three-point line and was 12-for-17 at the foul line. The Lady Miners finished with 11 players scoring in the contest and had a 39-35 advantage on the glass.

The Spartans shot only 37 percent in the second half and finished the game making 17-of-53 (32.1 percent) shots from the field. Missouri Baptist was 3-for-10 from the three-point line and 5-of-7 at the foul line. Valencia led the Spartans with 10 points while Robinson added eight points.

S&T returns to action next Friday traveling to St. Joseph, Mo., to take part in the Missouri Western Thanksgiving Classic. The Lady Miners will play a pair of former rivals from the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association next weekend. S&T will play the hosts Missouri Western at 7:30 p.m. next Friday and against Northwest Missouri State at 3 p.m. next Saturday.
