Lady Miners suffer 77-60 setback to Cameron

Stephenville, Texas – The Missouri S&T Lady Miners suffered a 77-60 setback against the Cameron Aggies on Saturday afternoon at the Whataburger Classic in Stephenville, Texas. S&T struggled on the offensive end shooting just 36 percent for the contest while turning the ball over 25 times resulting in 27 points for the Aggies.

S&T (1-1) got off to a good start scoring seven of the first nine points to grab an early five-point lead 1:30 into the contest. After a three-pointer from Janie Arand (Washington, Mo./St. Francis Borgia) on the break put them up five the Lady Miners went cold scoring just two points over the next six minutes. The Aggies (1-1) took advantage with an 11-2 run to grab a 13-9 lead late in the quarter. The lead grew to seven before Jamy Douvier (Sedgwick, Kan./Sunrise Christian Academy) hit a three with 0:16 left in the quarter to bring S&T to within four at the end of the period.
Cameron opened the second quarter on an 18-4 run to stretch the lead to 18 points with less than four minutes to play in the half. The Lady Miners scored seven of the final 10 points of the half to go into the locker room trailing 39-25.

S&T shot 39.2 percent (11-for-28) from the field in the first half, was 3-of-12 from three and didn't attempt a free throw. It was outrebounded by the Aggies 23-to-22 but Cameron turned 17 turnovers into 22 points and had a 17-point edge in points off turnovers. Arand and Douvier led the team in scoring with seven points each.

The Aggies shot 34.2 percent (13-for-38) from the floor, made 5-of-15 attempts from beyond the arc and went 8-for-12 at the foul line. Jamie Bonnarens led all scorers with 10 points in the half while Natalie Halbleib added nine.

Cameron dominated the third quarter outscoring the Lady Miners 27-13 knocking down 7 of 18 field goal attempts, making four three's and going 9-for-12 at the foul line. It lead by as many as 27 points in the quarter. S&T shot only 22 percent in the frame but did do a better job of hanging onto the ball.

The Lady Miners doubled up the Aggies in the final quarter to cut the margin to under 20 but it wasn't enough. Maddie Raley (Haubstadt, Ind./Gibson Southern), Katey Brown (Craig, Neb./Guardian Angels Central Catholic) and Sandra Douvier (Sedgwick, Kan./Sunrise Christian Academy) combined to score 13 of the 22 points in the quarter as S&T shot 45 percent from the field in the final frame.

Arand was the lone Lady Miner to finish in double figures scoring 13 points. Jamy Douvier (Sedgwick, Kan./Sunrise Christian Academy) and Raley finished with nine points each while Raetchel Gray (Allen, Okla./Byng ) and Sandra Douvier (Sedgwick, Kan./Sunrise Christian Academy) added eight points each. S&T finished the game hitting only 24-of-66 field goal attempts and was just 5-for-23 from downtown. It was outrebounded 50-46.

Cameron finished the game shooting only 34 percent from the field and was led in scoring by Brittany Hill with 15 points. Halbleib and Charron Montgomery added 12 points each while Bonnarens chipped in with 10.

The Lady Miners open the home portion of their schedule this coming Wednesday hosting Lincoln University in a 5:30 p.m. contest at the Bullman Multi-Purpose Building.
