Aurora, Ill. – The Missouri S&T Miner volleyball squad swept past Alderson Broaddus in the opening round of the 2016 Midwest Region Crossover on Friday morning at the Great Lakes Center in Aurora, Ill. The Miners (7-12) hit a season best 33 percent for the match and nearly doubled up the Battlers (2-17) in kills 44-to-23.
S&T opened the match scoring the first 13 points with
Ashley Allegri (Leawood, Kan./Shawnee Mission East) severing 12 straight points which set a school record breaking the previous mark of 10 straight points in a match against Maryville on Oct. 14, 2008. Tory Smiley served 10 straight points in that one. Alderson Broaddus never got closer than 12 points as the Miners hit nearly 48 percent in the opener and held the Battlers to a negative .185 hitting percentage to win 25-8.
Alderson Broaddus flipped the scripts in set two scoring the first six points and still led 10-6 when S&T began to mount a comeback scoring nine of the next 11 points to take the lead on a Battler error. ABU cut the lead to 17-16 but the Miners never allowed them to regain the lead ending the set with an 8-5 run to win 25-21 on a kill by
Claire Friedlund (Parkville, Mo./Park Hill South). S&T hit only 26 percent in the stanza with five of its seven attack errors coming off of blocks.
The Miners grabbed an early lead in the third set and wouldn't look back building an early four point lead and then keeping the Battlers at bay never allowing them to get closer than a point the rest of the way. S&T led 15-14 and was able to put the match away scoring 10 of the last 15 points to win 25-19 on a double block by
Kyley Thompson (Geneva, Ill./Geneva) and
Carson Talley (St. Louis, Mo./Affton).
The Miners were led by Friedlund with 10 kills. Talley and
Carlie Combs (O'Fallon, Mo./St. Dominic) added nine kills each.
Alexis White (Auburn, Wash./Riverside) handed out 32 assists and
Corinne Stulce (St. Charles, Mo./Duchesne) dug up 15 attacks.
