Somers, Wis. – The Missouri S&T Lady Miners resumed Great Lakes Valley Conference action dropping a
62-53 contest at Wisconsin-Parkside on Thursday evening in Somers, Wis. S&T (5-6, 1-3 GLVC) shot only 34 percent from the floor and was just 1-for-6 from beyond the arc.
The Lady Miners held a 6-4 lead 1:44 into the contest after a
Raetchel Gray (Allen, Okla./Byng ) layup but the Rangers responded with a 7-0 run over the next four minutes to take the lead for good behind five points from Brittney Fair. S&T battled back though with scoring eight of the next 10 points to cut the lead to 15-14 with 1:07 left in the quarter but a three-pointer by Tara Knapstein with 0:04 left gave Parkside a four point lead at the quarter break.
The Rangers extended their lead to eight points scoring the first four points of the frame but the Lady Miners continued to hang around cutting the deficit to 24-22 after a layup by
Bria Pierce (Overland Park, Kan./Blue Valley North) with 3:25 left in the half. Parkside pushed the lead back to seven before
Janie Arand (Washington, Mo./St. Francis Borgia) hit a three-pointer to make it a four point game at the break. S&T had a couple of chances to get closer in the final minute but a turnover and a missed jumper on back-to-back possessions ended the half.
Neither side shot the ball well in the opening 20 minutes as the Lady Miners were 10-for-27 (37 percent) from the floor while the Rangers made 37.5 percent (12-of-32) of their attempts. The difference was Parkside hit three three's while S&T made just one.
Sandra Douvier (Sedgwick, Kan./Sunrise Christian Academy) had eight points off the bench to lead the Lady Miners in the first half while Pierce dropped in six.
Knapstein and Fair combined for nearly half of the Rangers 29 points in the opening half.
S&T cut the Parkside halftime lead to 34-31 four minutes into the third quarter but the Rangers used a 13-3 run over the final six minutes building a 13-point lead by the end of the quarter. Knapstein led the charge scoring eight points in the stanza knocking down three of four shots including a three-pointer to spark the Parkside offense.
The Lady Miners cut the lead to nine three different times in the fourth quarter but were unable to get any closer. Everytime S&T scored the Rangers answered on the other end to extend the lead back to double figures.
Pierce finished with double-double scoring 16 points and grabbing 10 rebounds to lead the Lady Miners while
Jamy Douvier (Sedgwick, Kan./Sunrise Christian Academy) added 10. S. Douvier and
Joe'l Bland (St. Charles, Mo./Homeschooled) finished with eight points each. S&T finished the game making 18 of 53 shots and was 8-for-26 (31 percent) shooting in the second half. The Lady Miners did go to the foul line 21 times in the contest, making 16 of them. Pierce finished the game making
10 of 12 at the charity stripe.
Knapstein led four Parkside players in double figures with 19 points. Kristin Conniff added 11, Fair and Jessica Prince contributed 10 points each. The Rangers hit 42 percent of their shots in the second half and finished the game making 25 of 62 attempts from the field. They were only 5-of-27 from beyond the arc but outrebounded S&T 41-to-35.
S&T concludes its three-game road trip on Saturday traveling to Romeoville, Ill., for matchup against the ninth ranked Lewis Flyers at 1 p.m. The Flyers beat sixth ranked Drury 54-41 on Thursday in Romeoville.
