Quincy's hot start dooms Miners in high-scoring affair

ROLLA, Mo. – A fast start out of the gate by Quincy Saturday afternoon put Missouri S&T into a hole it could never escape from, as the Hawks won a Great Lakes Valley Conference shootout over the Miners 109-96 at Billy Key Court.

The Hawks made their first five shots from the floor in the contest, including four three-point baskets, to take a 16-2 lead just three minutes in.  Most of the early damage was done by Godson Eneogwe, who hit three of the long-range shots and scored 11 of the 16 points in the early flurry that.

Quincy maintained that double figure advantage until a 7-0 run by the Miners near the midway point of the half brought the lead down to six.  Danylo Zuikov (Kiev, Ukraine/LaLumiere School)'s three-pointer with 11:34 to go cut the Quincy lead to 26-20, but a 10-1 burst by the Hawks following Zuikov's basket extended the lead back to 15 within two minutes.

The Hawks led 54-36 at halftime as they made 21-of-35 from the floor and nine three-pointers in the first 20 minutes.

Quincy's lead reached 27 seven minutes into the second half, but a 14-0 Miner run brought it down to 13.   Telloy Simon (Kitchener, Ont./St. Mary's) scored seven points in the run and Zach Ellis (St. Louis, Mo./Whitfield School) added five, as Simon's jumper at the 11:04 mark made it 78-65.

S&T used another run later in the second half to trim the lead down to 11 and it had the margin at 10 with just under three minutes remaining, but that was as close as it would get.

Desmond Buerge (Carthage, Mo./Carthage) scored 22 of his career-high 26 points in the second half for the Miners (8-12, 4-7 GLVC), who had three players in double figures.  Ellis finished the afternoon with 17 points, while Simon added 16.  Missouri S&T hit eight three-pointers and also scored 40 points at the free throw line, going 40-of-44 at the charity stripe.

Eneogwe led all scorers in the game with 32 points and hit six of the 12 three-point baskets for a Hawk team that entered the game leading the GLVC in three-point baskets.  Herm Senor II also hit four treys as part of a 29-point, eight-assist effort that helped the Hawks (14-6, 8-3 GLVC) maintain a share of the GLVC West lead.

Quincy shot 60.9 percent for the game.

The Miners will continue their four-game homestand Thursday when they face 11th-ranked Bellarmine in a 7:30 p.m. game at Billy Key Court.
