Rolla, Mo. – The Missouri S&T Miner volleyball heads to Denver, Colorado, this weekend to take part in the prestigious Colorado Premiere Challenge event hosted by Regis University and Metropolitan State University of Denver. This is the first time in the history of the Miner program that they've been invited to this event which features 10 teams either ranked or receiving votes in this week's American Volleyball Coaches Top 25 poll.
S&T (4-0) looks to continue its best start in school history when it takes on Ferris State at 1 p.m. (CDT) on Friday afternoon at Regis University. The Miners took three of their four matches in straight sets last weekend at the Hilltopper Classic in Austin, Texas. Thanks to its hot start to open the season S&T received 18 votes in this week's Top 25 poll.
Krista Haslag (Linn, Mo./Helias ) was named the tournament's most valuable player while
Alexis White (Auburn, Wash./Riverside) earned all-tournament honors as well.
Ferris State enters this weekend's action ranked 13
th in the country after going 4-0 in its season opening tournament at home. The Bulldogs also won three of their four matches in straight sets which included a 3-1 win over Missouri Western and a 3-0 win over GLVC rival McKendree.
Ferris State was led by Caroline Heitzman who averaged over three kills per set last weekend while Megan Vander Meer and Alexis Huntey added 37 and 31 kills respectively. Stephanie Sikorski dished out almost 8.5 assists per set over the weekend while Danielle Dowd averaged nearly five digs per set.
Following that match the Miners will take on West Florida at 4:30 p.m. (CDT) to conclude bracket play. The Argonauts won three out of four matches at its season opening tournament sweeping past Missouri-St. Louis, Bridgeport and 21
st ranked Arkansas-Fort Smith. The Argos lone blemish was 3-2 loss to second ranked Southwest Minnesota State.
Autumn Duyn paced the UWF attack with 47 kills over the weekend while Kathryn Torre and Cora Bidlack added 33 and 32 kills respectively. Monique StCyr dished out 10.5 assists per set while Tori Martella averaged 4.93 digs/set.
After Friday's pool play teams will be split up into one of three brackets (Gold, Silver or Bronze) depending on their respective standings in pool play.
