LOUISVILLE, Ky. – Missouri S&T grabbed an early second half lead Sunday afternoon in its Great Lakes Valley Conference contest at Bellarmine, but the Knights answered with two goals a short time later and came away with a
2-1 win over the Miners.
After a scoreless first half – one where the Miners had three shots on net in the first eight minutes of play – S&T took the lead in the fourth minute of the second half as
Felipe Andrade (Belo Horizonte, Brazil) got a pass from
Maxi Fuchs (Munich, Germany), dribbled around a defender and hit a shot past Knight goalkeeper Zach Pogue.
That lead lasted only about seven minutes, as Callum Southern tied the game for Bellarmine by scoring on a direct free kick.
Bellarmine took the lead with just over 27 minutes to play when Beau Laufer headed in a cross from Mike Albes.
S&T had a good chance to tie the score in the 77
th minute when
Mitch Morris (O'Fallon, Mo./Fort Zumwalt West)' redirection of a corner kick was turned away by Pogue, then Pogue stopped shot by
Eduardo Abichabki (Sao Jose do Rio Pardo, Brazil/Colegio Unigrau) and
Martin Klevjer (Trondheim, Norway) in the final minutes to preserve the win for the Knights (5-2, 3-1 GLVC).
The Miners (2-4, 2-2 GLVC) outshot the Knights 14-13 in the game and had seven shots on goal to six for Bellarmine.
Nick Posey (Edwardsville, Ill./Edwardsville) finished with four saves in goal for S&T, who returns home Friday to host Illinois Springfield in a 7:30 p.m. contest at the S&T Soccer Field.
