WESTFIELD, Ind. – The Missouri S&T Lady Miner softball squad dropped both ends of a doubleheader at Indianapolis on Sunday afternoon
8-0 in five innings and
9-1 in six innings at Grand Park in Westfield, Ind.
Olivia Culbertson (Nevada, Mo./Nevada) and
Kyra Slemp (Roeland Park, Kan./Shawnee Mission East) finished the day with two hits apiece.
S&T (1-8, 0-4 GLVC) committed four errors in the opener on Sunday resulting in five unearned runs for the Greyhounds (15-5, 4-0 GLVC).
Indianapolis got the scoring started in the first inning in the opener. Erika Goodwin opened the game with a bunt single and advanced to second on a throwing error by
Bethany Rader (Memphis, Mo./Scotland County ). Sydney Russell drove her in with a double.
The Greyhounds added to their lead in the second inning with four runs. Cassie Reed had an RBI triple and scored on Katie Kelly's single. Russell then reached on a bunt single and a pair of errors on the play allowed Kelly and Goodwin to score.
Indianapolis added three more in the third as Goodwin had the big blow hitting a triple with the bases loaded.
The Lady Miners had two hits in the opener led by Slemp and
Ashley Rausch (Washington, Iowa/Washington) with one each. Rader suffered the loss allowing eight runs, three earned, on 11 hits and struck out three in 2.2 innings.
The Greyhounds struck first in the second game as well. With two outs Natalie Lalich singled to drive in Russell who had singled with one out. The 'Hounds added to their lead in the second scoring four times with the big blow being a two-run double from Russell. Indianapolis added its sixth run in the fourth inning as Russell drove in Goodwin with an RBI groundout to
Becca Strope (Glen Carbon, Ill./Edwardsville).
S&T's lone run came in the fifth inning.
Cailey Baker (Plainfield, Ill./Plainfield) led off the inning with a double and came around to score on
Monica Weiss (St. Louis, Mo./Marquette )'s one out single.
The Greyhounds added three more in the sixth as Casey Williamson singled home Kelly with two outs and then Lalich drove in two more runs with another single to end the game.
The Lady Miners finished with six hits in the night cap led by O. Culbertson with two while four others had a hit apiece.
Kati Viets (Sweet Springs, Mo./Sweet Springs) got the start in game two and suffered the loss allowing eight runs, six earned, on nine hits with a strikeout and a walk in 2.0 innings. Strope went 3.2 innings allowing a run on a hit and a walk
S&T opens up the home portion of its schedule this Saturday when hosting Bellarmine in a doubleheader beginning at 12 p.m.
