Slow start costs Lady Miners in loss to top ranked Lewis

ROMEOVILLE, Ill. – The Missouri S&T Lady Miners fell to the top ranked Lewis Flyers 65-49 on Saturday afternoon at Neil Carey Arena in Romeoville, Ill. Elsie Greenwood (Breckenridge, Mo./Penney High School) led the way for S&T with a career-high 22 points while Sandra Douvier (Sedgwick, Kan./Sunrise Christian Academy) added eight points.

The Flyers (24-1, 14-1 GLVC) raced out to an early lead though the Lady Miners (6-17, 2-13 GLVC) hung with Lewis for the first five-plus minutes trailing by only three at the first media timeout. The Flyers then went on a 9-0 run over the next two minutes to build a double digit lead. Alexus Grayer and Mariyah Brawner-Henley had all nine points in the run.

S&T wouldn't get closer than 10 points the rest of the half as the Flyers led by as many as 24 points in the opening frame. The Lady Miners had no answer for the duo of Grayer and Brawner-Henley who were a combined 9-for-18 from the floor and had seven rebounds.

S&T struggled to shoot the ball for a majority of the opening half making only one of its first seven attempts and were just 8-for-25 total from the floor in the opening while going 0-of-4 from beyond the arc. Greenwood led the Lady Miners with eight points while S. Douvier and Pagrode had four points each.

Lewis was led by the duo of Brawner-Henley and Grayer who combined for 23 points off the bench. Brawner-Henley led all scorers with 13 points while Grayer added 10. Jess Reinhart and Jamie Johnson had six points each. The Flyers shot 37 percent (14-for-38) from the floor, were 4-of-16 from beyond the arc and made 75 percent of its attempts at the foul line. They outrebounded S&T 28-14 and forced 12 turnovers resulting in 16 points.

The Lady Miners started the second half strong scoring the first seven points of the stanza to cut the Lewis lead to 41-26 four minutes into the second half. The Flyers responded by pushing the lead back out to 20 points as Brawner-Henley converted on an old fashioned three-point play with less than 14 minutes to go in the game.

S&T refused to go though responding with another 7-0 run to get within 48-35 two minutes later. It was the closest the Lady Miners had been since trailing 14-4 early in the contest. Lewis countered with a three-pointer from Jamie Johnson to push the lead back to 16 points and then the Flyers hit three straight free throws to push the margin back to 19 points.

S&T continued to scratch and claw as it had another 8-0 spurt to cut the Flyer lead to 11 points after Greenwood hit a layup in transition. That would be as close as the Lady Miners would get though as Lewis scored 11 of the final 17 points to finish with a 16-point win.

S&T shot better in the second half connecting on 37 percent of its attempts and finished the game shooting 19-for-55 (34.5 percent) from the floor. It was only 2-of-11 from beyond the arc and 9-for-13 at the charity stripe. The Lady Miners forced the Flyers to turn it over 23 times and outscored them 19-18 in points off turnovers.

Lewis finished the game shooting 22-for-67 (32.8 percent) from the field and held them to just 25 percent shooting from beyond the arc. The Flyers were 16-of-21 at the foul line and outrebounded S&T 52-32. They finished with 22 offensive rebounds. Brawner-Henley led four Flyers in double figures with 18 points while Johnson had 16. Reinhart had 11 points and Grayer dropped in 10.

S&T is back at home next Thursday when it hosts Rockhurst at 5:30 p.m. at the Bullman Multi-Purpose Building.
