St. Louis, Mo. – The Missouri S&T Lady Miners snapped its three-game losing streak behind a strong defensive effort to pick up a win at Missouri-St. Louis
53-41 on Saturday afternoon in St. Louis, Mo. The 41 points allowed by the Lady Miners were the second fewest they've allowed since joining the GLVC in the 2005-06 season. The record for the fewest points S&T has allowed in a conference game came in a 75-40 win at Saint Joseph's on Nov. 29, 2007.
Both sides were ice cold shooting the basketball in the opening half as the Tritons (3-5, 0-2 GLVC) scored the first four points of the game before S&T got on the board on a layup by
Elsie Greenwood (Breckenridge, Mo./Penney High School) 3:11 into the game. That layup sparked a 6-0 run by the Lady Miners as they took their first lead of the contest on a pair of free throws by
Sandra Douvier (Sedgwick, Kan./Sunrise Christian Academy).
UMSL hit a three in the closing seconds of the first quarter to take a 7-6 lead into the quarter break. The Tritons carried that momentum into the second quarter scoring eight of the first 10 points to extend its lead to 15-8 on a three-pointer by Robneisha Lee with 6:31 to go in the half.
S&T cut the lead to one with another 6-0 spurt getting four points from
Jamy Douvier (Sedgwick, Kan./Sunrise Christian Academy) and layup by
Janie Arand (Washington, Mo./St. Francis Borgia) to cut the lead to 15-14 with 3:16 left in the stanza. UMSL answered back getting back-to-back baskets to extend the led to five points before S. Douvier hit a free throw in the final minute of the quarter to make it 19-15 at the half.
The Lady Miners shot just 18.5 percent (5-for-27) from the floor in the opening half, went 0-of-5 from downtown but was 5-for-6 at the charity stripe. They outrebounded the Tritons 25-18 and outscored them 7-2 in second chance points. J. Douvier led the way with six points in the half while S. Douvier had three.
Both teams continued their cold shooting to start the second half but UMSL was able maintain a six point lead for a majority of the quarter before S&T took control midway through the quarter.
Bria Pierce (Overland Park, Kan./Blue Valley North) started the run hitting a pair of free throws and took the lead for good when
Joe'l Bland (St. Charles, Mo./Homeschooled) hit 1-of-2 at the line near the end of the third quarter to make it 27-26.
The Lady Miners extended their run into the fourth quarter scoring the first eight points of the frame to build a 35-26 lead on a layup by J. Douvier with 7:53 left in the contest.
The Tritons eventually snapped the run when Kelly Kunkel hit a three-pointer 1:06 later to make it 35-29.
Elsie Greenwood (Breckenridge, Mo./Penney High School) hit a big three-pointer on the ensuing possession to extend the lead back to nine and sparked a 9-1 run which allowed S&T to build a 14-point lead with less than five minutes to play.
UMSL trimmed the led to 47-38 on a three-pointer by Shea O'Brien with 2:20 to go but that would be the closest it got as S&T made six straight free throws to build its biggest lead of the game at 53-38 with 0:11 left. O'Brien hit a three at the buzzer for the final margin.
After scoring just 27 points in the first three quarters the Lady Miners scored 26 in the final quarter on 7-of-9 shooting from the floor and hit 11-of-12 at the foul line. J. Douvier, Bland and Greenwood combined to score 17 of the 26 points in the final quarter.
S&T finished the game shooting only 31 percent (15-for-49) from the floor but did make 88 percent (21-for-24) at the foul line and outrebounded the Tritons 49-to-27 including 15-8 on the offensive end. The Lady Miners bench outscored UMSL's bench 25-7. J. Douvier led S&T with a double-double scoring 14 points and grabbed a career-high 15 rebounds. Greenwood dropped in nine while
Raetchel Gray (Allen, Okla./Byng ) and Bland had seven apiece.
The Tritons finished the game shooting just 26 percent (14-of-54) from the field, made seven of its 20 attempts from the three-point line, but was only 6-of-11 at the charity stripe. Kunkel led UMSL with 12 points while O'Brien had 11.
S&T returns home on Tuesday to take on Westminster at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday's game begins a three-game homestand to close out the first half of the year for the Lady Miners.
