S&T gets five NCAA provisional marks in indoor opener at PSU

PITTSBURG, Kan. – Missouri S&T opened up its indoor track season this weekend with the men's and women's team each getting NCAA Division II provisional qualifying performances and the Lady Miners earning an event win in the Crimson & Gold Invitational – the first meet held at the new indoor facility at Pittsburg State University.

Ryan McGuire (Hobart, Ind./Hobart) reached the provisional qualifying mark in the pole vault in the season opener with a clearance of  16-5¼, a mark that earned him a second place finish in the meet. Three S&T pole vaulters hit provisonal marks in the meet, as David Jones-Richerson (St. Peters, Mo./Duchesne) and Lucas Rosenbaum (Sidney, Neb./Sidney HS) also surpassed the standard.

John Karsten (Jefferson City, Mo./Blair Oaks HS) placed second in the weight throw with a mark of 53-8½, while Nick Barrett (O'Fallon, Ill./O'Fallon) was fourth in the weight throw at 48-10, Karsten also had a fifth place finish in the shot put with a mark of 49-8¼ and Tyler Percy (O'Fallon, Mo./Fort Zumwalt West) took fifth in the 600-yard run in 1:15.05.

Luke Moehlenbrock (Mountain VIew, Mo./Mountain View-Liberty) had a sixth place showing in the high jump as he cleared 6-4 as did David Jones-Richerson (St. Peters, Mo./Duchesne) in the pole vault with a mark of 15-3½ that made the provisional mark, Trace Norfleet (Kansas City, Mo./Park Hill) in the long jump with a leap of 22-0¼ and the 4x400-meter relay team of 3:27.97.  Michael Mahoney (St. Peters, Mo./Fort Zumwalt East HS) had a sixth place showing as well in the heptathlon with a total of 4,298 points.

Lucas Rosenbaum (Sidney, Neb./Sidney HS) was seventh in the pole vault at 15-3½ -- also a provisional mark -- along with Logan Shearer (The Woodlands, Texas/Woodlands Christian Academy) in the 400-meters in 50.88 seconds, while Joe Bindner (St. Peters, Mo./Fort Zumwalt East HS) took eighth in the mile in 4:26.99.

Matt Sebelski, Brendan Cox (Columbus, Ohio/Grandview Heights HS) and Collin Boner (Cape Girardeau, Mo./Notre Dame Regional HS) tied for eighth in the high jump at 6-2, while Jaren Underwood (Mascoutah, Ill./Mascoutah HS) was ninth in the triple jump with a mark of 44-7½, just ahead of teammate Aaron Francis (St. Louis, Mo./MICDS)' mark of 44-4.  James Jennings (Rolla, Mo./Rolla) had a ninth place finish in the 600-yard run in 1:19.22.

Barrett finished 10th in the shot put with a throw of 35-8 as did Clayton  Daniels in the 60-meter hurdles in 9.12 seconds.

Rachael Lawal had S&T's event win for the Lady Miners Saturday, capturing first in the 600-yard run with a time of 1:27.53, while the NCAA provisional marks were posted by Amanda Wetzel (Keller, Texas/Keller) in the pole vault with a clearance of 12-3½ and Skyler Ruszkowski (League City, Texas/Clear Falls), finished second in her first collegiate high jump competition with a clearance of 5-6. 

S&T got a fourth place finish from Kim Huskey (Hillsboro, Mo./Grandview HS) in the 600-yard run in 1:32.91, while fifth place finishes came from Erika Simple (Bloomington, Ill./Normal University) in the 400-meters with a time of 59.48 seconds, while Crystal Beffa (Festus, Mo./Festus) was sixth in the 800-meters in 2:28.75.  The Lady Miners' 4x400-meter relay team of Lawal, Simple, Ruszkowski and Beffa also finished sixth in 4:10.29.

Elizabeth Robinson (Pleasant Plains, Ill./Pleasant Plains) was seventh in the shot put with a top throw of 31-4¾ and was also eighth in the weight throw with a mark of 40-1¼,

On Friday, S&T got a seventh place finish from Camille Baker (Knoxville, Tenn./Knoxville Catholic HS) in the pentathlon, while Natalie Schriever (Sullivan, Mo./Sullivan HS) finished ninth and Anne Massey (St, Louis, Mo./Lindbergh HS) in 10th.  Baker accumulated 3,114 points in the five-event competition, which included a second place finish in the 800-meters and a school record in the 60-meter hurdles of 9.26 seconds.

Missouri S&T's next competition will take place Jan. 15 at the Missouri Invitational in Columbia.
