KANSAS CITY, Mo. – Claudio Romano scored in each half for Rockhurst as the Hawks ended Missouri S&T's men's soccer season Friday with a
2-0 victory in the semifinals of the Great Lakes Valley Conference Tournament.
The fifth-ranked Hawks broke on top in an evenly-matched first half in the 43
rd minute when Romano got a cross in the box from Evan Craig and one-timed a shot past S&T goalkeeper
James Holloway (Cape Girardeau, Mo./Notre Dame Regional).
The Hawks did have a 6-1 advantage in shots in the first half, although the possession between the two teams was virtually even over the first 45 minutes.
S&T had a great scoring chance in the opening minutes of the second half when
Henning Schoene (Duisberg, Germany/Reinhard) headed a free kick at the goal that the Hawk defense cleared off the end line. Moments later,
Mitch Morris (O'Fallon, Mo./Fort Zumwalt West) had a head ball opportunity following a corner kick that went over the top of the net.
Romano scored again for Rockhurst in the 54
th minute on a play similar to the first goal he scored, as he got a pass right in front of the net from Kaleb Jackson and one-timed into the net to make it 2-0.
The Miners thought they had cut that lead in half in the 62nd minute when
Maxi Fuchs (Munich, Germany) sent a through ball to Will McInytre for an apparent goal, but S&T was called for offsides.
The Hawks (15-1-2), who will face Quincy in Sunday's championship game, outshot the Miners 11-10 for the game as S&T had a 9-5 advantage in the second half. Holloway finished the game with three saves, while
Eduardo Abichabki (Sao Jose do Rio Pardo, Brazil/Colegio Unigrau) had four shots.
Missouri S&T finished its season with a record of 10-8-2 in a year in which reached the GLVC semifinals for the second time.
