ASHLAND, Ohio – Missouri S&T had four players in double figures Saturday, but the long range shooting of Lake Erie made the difference as the Miners dropped their second game in as many days in a
100-89 loss in the Holiday Inn Exempt Classic.
The Storm connected 13 times from behind the three-point line to just three for the Miners, while hitting 52.2 percent of their shots for the game. And as was the case in Friday's nine-point loss to Ashland, S&T struggled with from the floor in the second half as it made only 33.3 percent overall and two-of-10 from beyond the arc.
Missouri S&T led for a majority of the first half, building as much as a nine-point lead following a pair of free throws by
Telloy Simon (Kitchener, Ont./St. Mary's) at the 12:15 mark. The Storm responded by scoring 13 of the next 17 points over the next three minutes to tie the game at 23, then took their first lead at 32-31 on Michael Morris' three-point shot with 5:46 to play in the half.
A jumper by
B.J. McLaughlin (Florissant, Mo./Hazelwood Central) put the Miners back into the lead, but the Storm outscored S&T 17-6 over the four minutes that followed to take a 10-point advantage late in the first half. However, S&T finished the half on a 7-0 run, capped by
Tyler Anderson (Lee's Summit, Mo./Lee's Summit North)'s put-back before the buzzer, to get within three at the break.
Lake Erie led through the entire second half and after the Miners got to within three on a trey by
Zach Ellis (St. Louis, Mo./Whitfield School) at the 15:54 mark, it began building its lead and pushed it back into double figures with 9:42 remaining on Andy Bosley's dunk.
The Storm lead stayed in double figures for most of the final 10 minutes and grew to as much as 14 as they made seven-of-15 from long range in the second half.
Ellis, who led S&T in scoring Friday, led the four Miners in double figures with 19 points and made all three of the team's three-pointers in the contest. Rokas Paulauskas added 18 points, while
Desmond Buerge (Carthage, Mo./Carthage) had 14 points and McLaughlin finished with a dozen.
The Miners (0-2) did hold a 10-rebound advantage in the game (44-34), with Paulauskas leading the way with eight.
Lake Erie (1-1), who lost on a shot at the buzzer on Friday to eighth-ranked Indianapolis, got a game-high 27 points from Bosley and 17 from Sean Howard as it had five players in double figures.
Missouri S&T will take on Missouri Baptist in its home opener Tuesday at 7 p.m. at Billy Key Court.
