INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – The Missouri S&T Lady Miners allowed a season-high 10 three-pointers and it was too much to overcome in a
69-57 loss at Indianapolis on Sunday afternoon. S&T was outscored 30-9 from beyond the arc.
The Greyhounds (5-6, 2-1 GLVC) scored the first five points of the contest and never trailed. The Lady Miners (4-7, 0-3 GLVC) cut the deficit to 9-7 after an old-fashioned three-point play by
Leigh-Ann Kesper (Edwardsville, Ill./Edwardsville), but UIndy countered with a 16-6 run spanning six minutes to take its largest lead of the half at 25-13 on a basket by Kelly Walter.
S&T battled back to within 30-27 with a minute to play in the stanza on a jumper by
Janie Arand (Washington, Mo./St. Francis Borgia) and had a chance to get even closer, but turned it over and the Greyhounds made them pay as Princess German hit a three to make it a six-point margin at the break.
The Lady Miners shot only 37.5 percent (12-for-32) from the floor in the first half, but was 0-of-5 from beyond the arc and 3-for-3 at the foul line. Kesper led S&T with nine points while
Sandra Douvier (Sedgwick, Kan./Sunrise Christian Academy) added eight off the bench.
The 'Hounds hit eight of their first 13 attempts to start the game then cooled off making just three of their last 14 to finish the half shooting 41 percent from the floor. They were 4-of-13 from three and 7-of-10 at the foul line. They outrebounded the Lady Miners 20-16, had a 6-0 edge in second chance points and 9-4 in points off turnovers. Carly Lythjohan led all scorers with 10 points while German dropped in eight.
Indianapolis hit a three-pointer to open the second half to stretch the lead to nine, but the Lady Miners continued to hang around staying within a seven points for the first 10 minutes of the stanza. S&T hit four straight at the foul line to close within 48-45 with more than nine minutes to play.
Walter hit back-to-back three's from the same spot sparking a 13-0 run over the next three minutes to stretch the lead to 16 with less than six minutes to go. The Lady Miners wouldn't get closer than eight points the rest of the way as the Greyhounds closed out the 12-point victory.
S&T shot just 35 percent from the field in the second half and finished the game making just 20 of its 55 attempts (36 percent). It was 3-for-10 from three and 14-for-14 at the foul line. Kesper led three Lady Miners in double figures with 13 points while Arand added 12 and
Jamy Douvier (Sedgwick, Kan./Sunrise Christian Academy) finished with 10.
Indianapolis shot nearly 50 percent from the floor in the second half and finished the game making 24 of its 55 attempts. It was 10-for-27 from the three-point line and 11-of-15 at the charity stripe. German had a game-high 18 points to lead the Greyhounds while Walter and Lythjohan added 15 and 13 respectively.
S&T returns home next Thursday to face the Bellarmine Knights in a 5:30 p.m. contest at the Bullman Multi-Purpose Building.
