Box Score ROLLA, Mo. – Missouri S&T opened its men's soccer season Saturday night by dominating the stat sheet against visiting Southwest Baptist, but it needed a second half goal from
Mitch Morris (O'Fallon, Mo./Fort Zumwalt West) to come away with a
1-0 victory over the Bearcats at Allgood-Bailey Stadium in the GLVC/MIAA Classic.
The Miners, playing for the first time ever at the university's football stadium after the field surface was converted to synthetic turf over the summer, outshot the Bearcats 25-2 and also had 12 of those shots on goal.
After a scoreless first half, the Miners finally broke the tie at the 54:28 mark when Morris got a foot on
Martin Klevjer (Trondheim, Norway/)'s corner kick and pinballed it off a pair of SBU defenders before it landed in the net.
S&T had a chance to extend the lead about 10 minutes later, but
David Zdvorak (Kansas City, Mo./Park Hill HS)'s shot from the wing went off the near post. However, the Bearcats did not have a shot on goal over the course of the second half as
James Holloway (Cape Girardeau, Mo./Notre Dame Regional) picked up his first career shutout. Holloway made one save in the opening half of play.
The Miners will host Lindenwood – an NCAA Division II quarterfinalist last season – in the final game of the GLVC/MIAA Classic Sunday at 7:30 p.m. The Lions played to a 1-1 tie with Missouri-St. Louis in the opening contest of the event Saturday; the Tritons will face SBU at 5 p.m.
