Box Score ROMEOVILLE, Ill. – Missouri S&T's men's soccer team ran smack into one of the better teams in the Great Lakes Valley Conference Sunday, as Lewis handed the Miners a
3-1 loss.
The Flyers, who were ranked among the nation's top 25 teams in the pre-season, got the lead in the first ten minutes off the contest and were able to extend it in the second half to give S&T a split of its weekend road trip. The Miners opened the weekend with a 1-0 win Friday at Wisconsin-Parkside and are now 2-2 overall on the season.
George Thomsen scored just over eight minutes into play on a give-and-go with Lenin Roa-Tapia for the first tally of the contest. The Miners then had some opportunities to knot the score before the half ended, but all four of their shots on net were turned away from Omar Ramirez.
Lewis extended its lead in the game's 71
st minute as Johnathan Silver scored out of a three-on-two break, putting a shot into the corner to the right of S&T goalkeeper
James Holloway (Cape Girardeau, Mo./Notre Dame Regional). The Flyers scored again nearly two minutes later when Nicholas Monteiro scored off a free kick.
The Miners broke the shutout at the 82:11 mark as
Ben Emnett (St. Louis, Mo./St. Louis University HS) got to a pass from
Eduardo Abichabki (Sao Jose do Rio Pardo, Brazil/Colegio Unigrau) before Ramirez could and found the net for the first time this season. Abichabki had a chance to score again in the waning moments, but reserve goalkeeper Justin Salazar stopped that effort.
Lewis had a 21-14 advantage in shots overall and a 14-9 edge in shots on goal, as Holloway was credited with 11 saves in 77 minutes of play. Abichabki led the Miners with three shots.
S&T will return home for its next two games, beginning with Friday's 7:30 p.m. GLVC contest against Saint Joseph's at the S&T Soccer Field.
