Miners open GLVC slate by blanking Rangers

9/12/2014 3:55:00 PM

Box Score KENOSHA, Wis. – Last season, Missouri S&T's men's soccer team recorded a first against Wisconsin-Parkside by beating the Rangers for the first time ever.  The Miners picked up another first against UW-Parkside Friday, knocking off the Rangers on their home field for the first time with a 1-0 victory to open their Great Lakes Valley Conference schedule.

David Zdvorak (Kansas City, Mo./Park Hill HS)'s goal in the 77th minute broke the scoreless tie and James Holloway (Cape Girardeau, Mo./Notre Dame Regional) and the Miner defense took care of the rest, as S&T picked up its second shutout win in three contests this season in improving to 2-1 on the year.

After the Miners survived a first half that saw UW-Parkside outshoot them by a 15-1 margin, they were able to turn the momentum in their direction in the final 45 minutes.  They had a couple of early opportunities turned away by Ranger goalkeeper Marcos Perez, but Zdvorak finally broke the ice with his unassisted tally at the 76:20 mark.

S&T had a chance to extend the lead with nearly five minutes to play, but Martin Klevjer (Trondheim, Norway/) hit a shot off the goal post.  However, the Miner defense was exceptional in the second half, holding the Rangers – who had a 19-9 advantage in shots for the game -- to just four shots in the final 45 minutes and none in the last 30 minutes.

Holloway turned away all seven Rangers shots on net in the opening half and added an eighth save in the second period of play for his second shutout of the year.

Missouri S&T will conclude its weekend road trip Sunday when it takes on Lewis in a noon game in Romeoville, Ill.
