Lady Miners upset Bellarmine 2-0 to earn first postseason win in school history

LOUISVILLE, Ky. – Missouri S&T's women's soccer team upset the second seeded Bellarmine Knights 2-0 on Sunday in the quarterfinals of the GLVC Women's Soccer Tournament. For S&T it's the first postseason win in the history of the program and marks the first win over the Knights since a 1-0 win in Rolla on Nov. 1, 1997.

S&T becomes the first seven seed to advance to the semifinals of the GLVC Women's Soccer Tournament since 2000 when Wisconsin-Parkside defeated SIU-Edwardsville 2-0.

"The two biggest factors in our success today were the players desire to win and the discipline to execute our game plan," head coach Joe McCauley said.

Bellarmine head coach Chris Tinius added the following.

"Congratulations to S&T and (Coach) Joe (McCauley)," Tinius said. "They were completely dominant in both goal boxes today. Even with four forwards, the last 12 minutes we couldn't win a ball off of them. If they keep that up, they can win the whole thing."

The Lady Miners (9-9), seeded seventh in the tournament, got on the board first with a goal from Sabrina Hostler (St. Louis, Mo./Cor Jesu Academy) in the 10th minute. Sarah Hostler (St. Louis, Mo./Cor Jesu Academy) crossed the ball to the center of box and Sab. Hostler shot it into the lower right corner for her ninth of the season.

S&T withstood the onslaught from Bellarmine (13-3-3) over the final 35 minutes of the half as the Knights took 11 of their 12 shots in the opening 45 minutes in that span. Kaitlyn Deister (St. Louis, Mo./Visitation Academy) and the Lady Miner defense were up to the challenge as Deister made seven saves and the defense blocked a couple of shots to keep the goose egg on the scoreboard.

Bellarmine outshot S&T 12-2 in the half and put seven of those on goal compared to just two for the Lady Miners.

The Knights continued applying the pressure in the first 15 minutes of the second half looking for the tying goal taking five of the six shots. S&T's defense continued to hold strong blocking another shot and Deister made four saves.

The Lady Miners got some breathing room with less than 15 minutes to play in the contest. Sab. Hostler took a shot that was saved by Hannah Poteet, but Poteet couldn't hang onto the rebound and Hostler put it in for her second of the day and 10th of the season. Hostler's 10 goals in a season are the most for a single player since Barb Porter scored 11 in the 2003 season.

Bellarmine recorded two more shots in the final 11 minutes of the game but they both went over the bar.

The Knights dominated the stat sheet outshooting S&T 20-7, 11-4 in shots on goal and had an 11-1 edge in corner kicks. Deister's 11 saves matched her career-high and the shutout was the 15th of her career moving her into sole possession of second place in school history.

The Lady Miners will play in the GLVC Semifinals against Quincy at Wisconsin-Parkside on Friday at a time to be announced. Quincy and Rockhurst played to a 1-1 draw on Sunday, but Quincy advances by defeating Rockhurst 5-4 in penalty kicks.
