SPRINGFIELD, Mo. – For the second time in five days, Missouri S&T's men's soccer team dropped a
1-0 decision to Drury as the teams clashed in the opening round of the Great Lakes Valley Conference Sunday afternoon.
As was the case on Wednesday, it was Nick Ammann who put the only goal on the scoreboard as he tallied an unassisted goal in the first half that eventually brought the Miner season to an end when they couldn't come up with the equalizer.
The Panthers, who had a stiff breeze at their backs in the opening half, got on the scoreboard at the 14:24 mark when Ammann got the ball just inside of midfield, dribbled through the heart of the S&T defense and scored on a shot from about 20 yards away into the upper left corner.
Drury was able to take advantage of the wind in the first half to keep the ball on the Miners' end of the field for much of it, but S&T had a good opportunity with about five minutes left in the half after
David Zdvorak (Kansas City, Mo./Park Hill HS) was fouled just outside the box. However, the free kick attempt by Henning Schone went just wide of the goal and the game went to halftime with the Panthers up 1-0.
S&T had another good chance with 25 minutes to go when
Eduardo Abichabki (Sao Jose do Rio Pardo, Brazil/Colegio Unigrau) put a 20-foot shot on net, but was stopped by Panther goalkeeper Logan Ponche. About three minutes later, the Miners were able to clear away a shot by Ammann that hit the crossbar that could have extended the Drury lead.
With four minutes left,
Mitch Morris (O'Fallon, Mo./Fort Zumwalt West) sent a long free kick from near midfield to the goal, but Ponche hauled that one in before the Miners could make a play on it to keep the Miners off the scoreboard.
Drury finished with a 12-5 advantage in shots and had six on goal to two for the Miners.
James Holloway (Cape Girardeau, Mo./Notre Dame Regional) recorded five saves for S&T – all of them coming in the first half. Abichabki and
Martin Klevjer (Trondheim, Norway) had the two shots on goal for the Miners, who finished the season with a record of 8-8-2. The Panthers, ranked 24
th nationally, improved to 15-3 in advancing to the semifinal round.
