ROLLA, Mo. – Getting a goal in each half coupled with another air-tight defensive performance, Missouri S&T's men's soccer team picked up a critical road win in Great Lakes Valley Conference play Friday afternoon with a
2-0 victory at William Jewell.
Friday's win allowed the Miners to retain the seventh place position in the GLVC standings – the top eight teams will play in the conference tournament – with two games left on the schedule. S&T's last two regular season games are against teams ahead of them in the standings, as it hosts Rockhurst Sunday at 2:30 p.m. and plays at Drury in the season finale on Wednesday.
Thus, with a sense of urgency in place to solidify its spot in the top eight, the Miners took care of business Friday in a game that had a lot of back and forth play early on.
The teams traded a number of shots in the early going before the Miners broke on top in the game's 29
th minute. After
Eduardo Abichabki (Sao Jose do Rio Pardo, Brazil/Colegio Unigrau) hit the post with a shot,
Martin Klevjer (Trondheim, Norway) got on the rebound and hit it past Shane Van Hooser to give S&T the lead.
Early in the second half,
David Murphy (Naperville, Ill./Naperville Central) tallied his first goal of the season when he took a pass from Abichabki and sent a shot from the wing by Van Hooser to make it 2-0.
Following Murphy's goal, Miner goalkeeper
James Holloway (Cape Girardeau, Mo./Notre Dame Regional) had to turn away a shot on net by Ethan Delaney, then another 11 minutes later by Justin Riley. Riley's shot, which came in the 66
th minute, would be the last shot on net for the Cardinals (3-10-3, 2-8-3 GLVC) and next-to-last in the game as Holloway recorded his sixth shutout of the season.
The Miners have allowed just two goals – and only one in the run of play – over their last six games. The result is that S&T is now above the .500 mark, both overall at 7-6-2 and in conference play at 6-5-2.
Missouri S&T had a 13-11 advantage in shots in the game.
Sunday's contest with Rockhurst will be played at the S&T Soccer Field.
