(Rolla, Mo.) – Missouri S&T's volleyball team plays its final two home matches of the 2014 season this weekend hosting McKendree on Saturday at 5 p.m. and Illinois Springfield on Sunday afternoon at 1 p.m.
The Miners are looking to build off their strong showing at last weekend's GLVC/GLIAC Crossover and look to carry that momentum into their final seven matches of the regular season and secure a spot in the GLVC Tournament for a fourth straight season.
The Miners (12-10, 7-4 GLVC) and Bearcats (13-9, 7-4 GLVC) met earlier this season in a non-conference match in Lebanon, Ill., with S&T winning in straight sets 25-19, 25-18, 25-17. Alison
Mueller led the Miner attack in that contest with 12 kills while
Claire Friedlund (Parkville, Mo./Park Hill South) added eight kills.
McKendree enters Saturday's contest having won four of its last five contests and are currently in a three-way tie with Missouri-St. Louis and S&T for fifth in the conference standings.
The Bearcats are averaging 13.62 kills per set for the season and are led by Sophie Fairman and Lauren Apetz with 2.76 and 2.17 kills/set respectively. Aubrey Dickman leads the team in assists with an average of 5.24 per set while Arela Williams leads the squad in digs with 2.68 per set.
The Miners will be recognizing their alumni in between sets two and three on Saturday evening.
Illinois Springfield enters Saturday's contest at Drury riding a four-match winning streak after going 3-0 at the Crossover last weekend and then defeated Kentucky Wesleyan at home on Sunday. The Prairie Stars won all four of those matches in straight sets to improve to 8-12 overall, but are just 1-10 in GLVC action.
UIS is averaging 12.0 kills per set and has an attack percentage of .207. It's led offensively by Shelby Geers with 2.71 kills/set while Nikki Madoch is averaging 2.25 kills per set. Lexi Hall is the primary setter for the Stars dishing out 5.72 assists/set and Kayla Katarzynski is the leader on the defensive side of the ball with 4.61 digs per set.
S&T will honor its four seniors along with student assistant coach Dan Landwehr and student manager Ashton Tiddy prior to the start of Sunday's match.
