(Rolla, Mo.) – The Missouri S&T Miner volleyball squad will take a break from Great Lakes Valley Conference to action to travel to Chicago to take part in the seventh annual GLVC/GLIAC Crossover at the Great Lakes Center. The Miners, (10-9, 7-4 GLVC) the sixth seed from the GLVC, will play the Michigan Tech Huskies, the seventh seed from the GLIAC, on Friday at 2:30 p.m. On Saturday S&T will face the top seeded Lakers from Grand Valley State at 10 a.m. and then close out the tournament with a match against the fifth seeded Saginaw Valley State Cardinals.
The Miners had a rough weekend at home going 1-2. They swept past Quincy on Friday night behind a strong performance from
Gracey Moon (Kirkwood, Mo./Kirkwood) who finished the match with nine kills and had an attack percentage of .643. On Saturday S&T dropped its first game of the day to Truman State 3-1 but had their opportunities to steal a win. Once again Moon led the attack with 12 kills while
Krista Haslag (Linn, Mo./Helias ) and
Katie McDonald (Orland Park, Ill./Providence Catholic) had nine kills apiece. In their second contest on Saturday night against Harding the Miners held a 2-1 lead going into the fourth set but were unable to close the Bison out in a 3-2 loss. Haslag matched her career-high with 18 kills while
Jackie Zellmer (Nixa, Mo./Nixa) contributed 14 kills and Moon finished with 11 kills.
Michigan Tech comes into the Crossover with a record of 8-9 but is 6-5 in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference after going 2-1 last week. The Huskies opened the week with a sweep at Urbana last Monday and then swept past Tiffin at home on Friday then dropped a five-set match to Ohio Dominican on Saturday.
Grand Valley State enters play this week riding an 11-match winning streak and are 13-2, 11-0 in the GLIAC. The Lakers had their streak of 19 consecutive sets won broken against Findlay on Saturday in a five set victory. Grand Valley will play Lewis on Friday afternoon then take on S&T and Rockhurst on Saturday.
Saginaw Valley enters play this weekend with a record of 10-6 and 7-4 in the GLIAC. The Cardinals ran their winning streak to three over the weekend sweeping past Ashland and Lake Erie. SVSU will play Wisconsin-Parkside and Rockhurst in its first two contests before taking on the Miners.
