Miners go to OT again, play to draw with McKendree

9/29/2013 8:03:00 PM

Box Score ROLLA, Mo. – For the third straight game and fourth in the last five, Missouri S&T's men's soccer team ended up in overtime, but after 20 extra minutes of play, neither team was able to put a ball into the net as the Miners played to a 1-1 tie with McKendree in Great Lakes Valley Conference play at the S&T Soccer Field.

In a contest where the Bearcats held a shots edge of a little better than two-to-one, it was the Miners who broke on top late in the first half.  With just under two minutes to play before the intermission, Diego Robayo (Snohomish, Wash./Snohomish) sent a ball through the Bearcat defense that Ryan Lawhead (O'Fallon, Ill./O'Fallon Township) got to and put a shot from the center of the box past McKendree goalkeeper Scott Armistead.

The lead held up until midway through the second half when the Bearcats were awarded a penalty kick after BJ Tucker went down in the box.  Liam Robley converted the attempt to knot the score at the 68:04 mark.

Over the final 20-plus minutes of regulation time and through both of the overtime periods, the two teams traded scoring chances but none of the efforts ended up as goals.  The Bearcats had a couple of corner kick opportunities in the final minute, but the Miners cleared the first one away and Jan Peters hit a long shot wide just before time expired.

McKendree had a 28-13 advantage in overall shots and a 13-9 edge in shots on goal.  Matt Jackson (Iowa City, Iowa/Iowa City West) made 12 saves in the nets for the Miners, who went to 4-3-1 overall and 3-2-1 in the GLVC with Sunday's tie.  The Bearcats finished the day at 2-5-1 overall and 0-5-1 in GLVC play.

Missouri S&T heads to the St. Louis for conference play next weekend, beginning Friday afternoon with a 1:30 p.m. game at Maryville University.
