ROLLA, Mo. – Missouri S&T's men's soccer team returns to the road this weekend – this time for two Great Lakes Valley Conference matches – heading east for a weekend swing to face Southern Indiana and Illinois Springfield.
The Miners and Southern Indiana, who face off Friday in a 7:30 p.m. contest in Evansville, Ind., both came away with a split on the opening weekend of GLVC play and did so in similar fashion. The Miners were shut out Friday by 16
th-ranked Rockhurst 2-0, but came away with a 2-1 overtime win Sunday at home over William Jewell.
David Zdvorak (Kansas City, Mo./Park Hill HS) scored the game-winner for the Miners in the seventh minute of the extra period off an assist from
Bryce Phillips (Kingwood, Texas/Kingwood HS) to get the Miners to 1-1 in the GLVC and 2-2 overall. Zdvorak has scored twice this season for the Miners and shares the team scoring lead with Phillips and
Alex Reifschneider (O'Fallon, Ill./O'Fallon Township).
Meanwhile, the Screaming Eagles were also blanked Friday by Illinois Springfield but picked up an overtime win of their own Sunday, downing McKendree 3-2 in a game that featured a wild finish to regulation time as three goals were scored in the final eight minutes. USI came away victorious in the fifth minute of overtime on Corey Fundenberger's goal.
On Sunday, Missouri S&T will take on an Illinois Springfield team that was one of three in the GLVC to win twice on the opening weekend of action. Besides their win over USI, the Prairie Stars also knocked off Bellarmine to hold a share of the league lead with Rockhurst and Quincy.
Dylan Hoschar, who scored twice in Sunday's win over Bellarmine and Chukwuka Iwe have scored twice apiece to lead UIS in scoring.
