Early burst sends Miners to defeat in GLVC opener at Rockhurst

9/13/2013 9:57:00 PM

Box Score KANSAS CITY, Mo. – Rockhurst got two quick goals in the early minutes of Friday's Great Lakes Valley Conference opener and went on to hand the Miners a 2-0 defeat.

Mark Magee, last season's "Player of the Year" in the GLVC, scored twice in a span of 40 seconds in the first 16 minutes of play.  His first goal came on a great individual effort, as he took a pass near the sideline, dribbled through the Miner defense to the center of the field and hit a shot that went past S&T goalkeeper Matt Jackson (Iowa City, Iowa/Iowa City West) just inside the right post.

Moments later, the Miners were called for a hand ball in the box and Magee converted a penalty kick to give the Hawks an early two-goal lead.

The Miners, who were outshot 18-5 in the contest, had a couple of good scoring chances in the second half.  Ben Bartnicke (Little Rock, Ark./Catholic HS) had a shot that just went over the top of the net at the 65:10 mark and the Miners had a couple of corner kick opportunities later in the half, but were unable to convert them.  The Hawks had six corner kicks to five for S&T.

Matt Jackson (Iowa City, Iowa/Iowa City West) made eight saves in goal for the Miners.

Missouri S&T will play its GLVC home opener Sunday when it hosts William Jewell in a 2:30 p.m. game at the S&T Soccer Field.
