ROLLA, Mo. – Following an opening weekend that saw it split its first two games of the season, Missouri S&T's men's soccer team heads to the road for the first time in the 2013 season and to open Great Lakes Valley Conference play in the process when it faces defending league champion Rockhurst Friday night.
It will be the first of two weekend contests for the Miners, who return home for a Sunday afternoon GLVC clash against William Jewell at 2:30 p.m. at the S&T Soccer Field.
The Miners opened their regular season schedule Saturday by scoring four times in the opening half, leading to a 6-0 victory over Southwest Baptist in the GLVC-MIAA Classic. However, S&T was hit by a three-goal flurry in the second half by 18
th-ranked Lindenwood and suffered a 3-0 setback.
Bryce Phillips (Kingwood, Texas/Kingwood HS) and
Alex Reifschneider (O'Fallon, Ill./O'Fallon Township) each scored twice in the Miner win, while
Matt Jackson (Iowa City, Iowa/Iowa City West) recorded his 10
th career shutout but turning away six shots.
S&T's weekend opponents also went 1-1 during their first weekend of action, with the losses coming to a nationally-ranked Northeastern State team and victories coming over Newman.
Rockhurst, ranked 16
th in this week's NSCAA Division II rankings, beat Newman 5-0 before falling 1-0 Sunday to Northeastern State, a loss that ended the Hawks' 27-game unbeaten streak at home. The Hawks outshot NSU 16-6 in Sunday's contest and have a 50-13 advantage in shots over the first two games of the season.
Mitchell Moncada scored twice in the win over Newman for Rockhurst, who has knocked off the Miners in each of the last three meetings including a 2-1 win late last season in Rolla.
William Jewell lost 4-0 to Northeastern State to open the year, then got a goal in the 70
th minute from Bryan Jones to pick up a 3-2 win over Newman Sunday. The Cardinals, who lost their top two scorers from a year ago that combined for 21 goals, beat S&T 2-0 last year in Liberty, Mo., after the Miners posted a 2-0 win a year earlier in the last meeting in Rolla.
