Wednesday's results

CLEVELAND, Miss. – Missouri S&T's swimming team finds itself in second place after the opening night of competition at the New South Intercollegiate Swimming Championships.

Only three events – including two relays – were contested in Wednesday night's session.  Delta State edged the Miners in the 200-yard medley relay posting a time of 1:30.74 to S&T's 1:31.03 posted by the team of Andrew Schranck (Alton, Ill./Marquette Catholic), Drew Larkins (Chesterfield, Mo./Parkway Central), Danylo Mykhailov (Khankiv, Ukraine/Sport Collegue N.S.) and Jacob Dole (Corbin, Ky./Country Day School), gaining a six-point edge on the Miners with that victory.

The Miners made up two of those points in the 800-yard freestyle relay by placing third to Delta State's fourth place effort.  Luke Norris (The Woodlands, Texas/The Woodlands), Sasha Stadnik (Overland Park, Kan./Blue Valley West), Keith Sponsler (Lincoln, Neb./Lincoln East) and Ryan Layne (Houston, Texas/Cypress Creek) made up the team that recorded a time of 6:43.56.

In the only individual event that took place on day one, Matt Welsh (Wildwood, Mo./Lafayette) finished second in the 1,000-yard freestyle in a time of 9:28 flat, while teammate Ethan Goldfarb (Arlington, Texas/The Oakridge School) was right behind him in third in 9:28.03.  S&T also got a sixth place finish from Alfredo Martinez (Mexico City, Mexico/Instituto Cumbres San Javier) in 9:44.75.

The Miners also captured the consolation final in the 200-medley relay, as Luis Nesrala (Santo Domingo, D.R./Colegio Amador), Andrew Simek (O'Fallon, Mo./Fort Zumwalt West), Ryan Gibson (Jackson, Mo./Jackson) and Sponsler posted a mark of 1:34.82.

The Miners trail host Delta State by two points, 146-144, after the first three events, with Henderson State sitting in third place with 110 points.  The meet will run through Saturday.
