Road stretch concludes for Miners with trip to Kentucky Wesleyan

10/8/2013 2:56:00 PM

ROLLA, Mo. – Missouri S&T's football team concludes a three-game stretch away from home this weekend, as it seeks its first Great Lakes Valley Conference victory of the year against a Kentucky Wesleyan team looking to break into the win column for the first time in 2013.

Saturday's contest at Steele Stadium, which will be Kentucky Wesleyan's Homecoming game, will start at 3 p.m.

The Miners were tied in their GLVC opener with No. 21-ranked Indianapolis last Saturday at three apiece when the game was delayed by lightning with 6:22 left in the opening half.  When the game resumed 33 minutes later, the Greyhounds intercepted an S&T pass on the first play after the stoppage and scored the go-ahead touchdown off that turnover.  UIndy would get another touchdown off an interception before the half ended and went on to win 34-3 to drop S&T to 1-4 overall.

Missouri S&T outgained the Greyhounds by a 297-270 margin in the game and had 205 yards on the ground, but were done in by six turnovers that led to 24 Indianapolis points.

Melvin Stovall (Los Angeles, Calif./Lancaster), who has a team-high 32 receptions on the season, had eight catches in Saturday's game while Nick Taylor (Wichita, Kan./Southeast HS) and Leon Moody (St. Louis, Mo./DeSmet Jesuit HS) have 20 catches apiece.  Zenel Hudson (Bayshore, N.Y./Milford Academy) leads the Miner ground game with 409 yards, but Chris Kennard (Plano, Texas/Parish Episcopal) and Anthony Moore (Hazelwood, Mo./McCluer) had career-high games on the ground for S&T as they combined for 125 yards.

Chris Emesih (Houston, Texas/Westfield) continues to lead the S&T defense in tackles with 37, while Zach Melber (St. Louis, Mo./Oakville) and Mark Hopkins (Chicago, Ill./Whitney Young) have 30 stops each.  Will Brown (Hazelwood, Mo./Hazelwood West) ranks atop the GLVC with 12 pass breakups.

Meanwhile, Kentucky Wesleyan was also dealing with weather matters in Indiana on Saturday, as its game with Saint Joseph's was called early due to lightning in a 35-9 loss to the Pumas.  The setback dropped the Panthers to 0-5 and 0-1 in GLVC play.

Kentucky Wesleyan has one of the top all-around threats in the conference in Jeff Ward, who ranks first in the conference and seventh in NCAA Division II in all-purpose yardage with 201.8 per game.  Ward, who leads KWC with 31 pass receptions, has scored six of the Panthers' 10 touchdowns on the season on four scores via receptions, a kickoff return and a punt return, which accounted for the only KWC touchdown at Saint Joseph's.

Will Barnes was eight-of-16 for 63 yards in his first start at quarterback Saturday, while linebacker Cody Mills has made 32 tackles with two quarterback sacks to lead the Panther defensive unit.

The Miners have won all nine previous meetings from Kentucky Wesleyan and won last year's matchup 47-23 in Rolla.
