Miners land first-ever win over Rangers with 2-0 whitewashing

10/27/2013 5:58:00 PM

Box Score ROLLA, Mo. – Needing a win Sunday to keep itself in contention for a spot in the Great Lakes Valley Conference Tournament, the Miners got that by posting their first-ever win over Wisconsin-Parkside with a 2-0 victory at the S&T Soccer Field.

The win by the Miners, now 7-7-2 overall and 6-6-2 in the GLVC, moved the Miners into eighth place in the GLVC Tournament race with only one game to play, which for S&T will be Wednesday night against Drury. The Miners moved past UW-Parkside and Truman State, who lost 1-0 at Illinois Springfield Sunday, into the final playoff spot.

S&T got off to a strong start Sunday and broke on top in the 22nd minute of play when David Zdvorak (Kansas City, Mo./Park Hill HS) redirected Kramer Hall (Liberty, Mo./Liberty HS)'s corner kick inside the far post. The Miners would add to that lead a little over five minutes later when Ben Bartnicke (Little Rock, Ark./Catholic HS) sent a ball to a wide open Ben Emnett (St. Louis, Mo./St. Louis University HS) on the right wing; Emnett would put a shot by UWP goalkeeper Marcos Perez to give S&T a two-goal lead.

From there, the Miner defense and goalkeeper Matt Jackson (Iowa City, Iowa/Iowa City West) would take care of matters as S&T recorded its fifth shutout of the season. Jackson made seven saves in goal for the Miners, including a stop on a point blank shot by Elliott Schultz shortly after the Zdvorak goal.

The Miners outshot UW-Parkside 12-8 in the first half and 16-12 for the game, while the Rangers (7-7-2, 6-7-1 GLVC) had a 5-4 edge in corner kick opportunities.

Sunday's win by the Miners was their first in 13 tries against the Rangers, as S&T had previously suffered eight losses and played to four ties against them.

Missouri S&T's contest with Drury Wednesday will get underway at 8:30 p.m.
