10/25/2013 10:29:00 PM

Box Score ROLLA, Mo. – A late goal by Robert Zieba allowed 20th-ranked Lewis to escape the Missouri S&T Soccer Field with a victory Friday night, as the Flyers took a 1-0 Great Lakes Valley Conference win from the Miners.

Zieba got a pass around the top of the box and put a shot into the upper right corner of the net past S&T goalkeeper Matt Jackson (Iowa City, Iowa/Iowa City West) with just 5:42 remaining in regulation time to break the scoreless deadlock.

In a game where the Flyers held a 15-9 advantage in shots, the Miners were unable to get a good scoring chance after the Zieba goal as they fell to 6-7-2 overall and 5-6-2 in GLVC play. Lewis moved to 10-1-4 overall and 9-1-3 in the GLVC.

S&T had two shots on net in the contest, one a head ball by Joe Macke (St. Charles, Mo./Francis Howell Central HS) in the first half that Lewis goalkeeper Ryan Pickett knocked over the crossbar and the other on a long shot by Gilberto Robayo (Snohomish, Wash./Snohomish) in the second half.

Jackson made five saves for the Miners, who will face Wisconsin-Parkside in a critical game in their efforts to make the GLVC Tournament field on Sunday at 2:30 p.m. The Rangers, who fell 2-1 Friday at Drury, hold the eighth and final spot but are just one-half game in front of S&T following Friday's action.
