Miners take four events in home finale against Missouri State

ROLLA, Mo. – Missouri S&T closed out its home schedule Friday evening by getting four event wins in a 119-85 loss to a strong Missouri State team at the S&T Pool.

The Miners opened Friday's meet by winning the 200-yard medley relay, as Jacob Dole (Corbin, Ky./Country Day School) overcame a one-half second deficit with 50 yards to go to swim a 20.31 leg in the freestyle to give S&T the win.  The team of Andrew Schranck (Alton, Ill./Marquette Catholic), Aljaz Kerc (Ljubljana, Slovenia/Gimnazija Bezigrad), Danylo Mykhailov (Khankiv, Ukraine/Sport Collegue N.S.) and Dole finished the race in a time of 1:33.69.

At the end of the night, Dole swam a 19.47 leg to help the Miners rally again in the final 50 yards to win the 200-freestyle relay in 1:23.32.  He was joined by Kerc, Mykhailov and Keith Sponsler (Lincoln, Neb./Lincoln East) in the race that the Miners won by 0.01 seconds.

S&T also got wins from Kerc in the 50-yard freestyle in a time of 21.30 seconds, as he edged Mykhailov's time of 21.32 and Dole in the 100-free as he recorded a time of 46.38 seconds.

Along with Mykhailov's second place finish in the 50-free, the Miners also got seconds from Matt Welsh (Wildwood, Mo./Lafayette) in the 1,000-freestyle in 9:48.62, Matt Zieger (St. Joseph, Mo./Central) in the 200-freestyle in 1:44.23, Schranck in the 100-yard butterfly in 51.03 seconds,  Ethan Goldfarb (Arlington, Texas/The Oakridge School) in the 500-yard freestyle in 4:47.28 and Drew Larkins (Chesterfield, Mo./Parkway Central) in the 100-yard breaststroke with a time of 59.56 seconds.  Sponsler had a third place effort in the 200-freestyle in 1:46.39.

The Miners had the lead in the team score through four events, but the Bears swept the top three spots in the 400-yard individual medley to move in front.

The Miners' next competition will take place at the New South Intercollegiate Swimming Championships, beginning Feb. 13 at Delta State University in Cleveland, Miss.
