Box Score (St. Louis, Mo.) - The Missouri S&T Miner volleyball team used a balanced offensive attack to earn its first ever win at Missouri-St. Louis
3-1 (25-23, 25-23, 21-25, 25-18) on Friday evening at the Mark Twain Building. S&T runs its winning streak to six in a row, 10 of its last 11 and remains a game in front of Rockhurst for the top spot in the GLVC West Division.
The Miners (10-5, 6-0 GLVC) finished the contest with 63 kills and had four players reach double figures in kills led by
Hayley Wright (Omaha, Neb./Millard West) with 16.
Julie Meyer (Marthasville, Mo./St. Francis Borgia) added 15,
Alison Mueller (Bartelso, Ill./Mater Dei ) chipped in with 14 and
Kelly Kosmopolis (O'Fallon, Ill./O'Fallon Township) had 10. Not to be outdone the S&T defense had 84 digs led by
Jocelyn DeMotte (Topeka, Kan./Hayden)'s 28.
Jennifer Kegler (Ballwin, Mo./Cor Jesu Academy) finished with 21, and is now five digs away from 1,000 for her career, Meyer added 13 more to finish with a double-double.
The opening set saw 15 ties and eight lead changes as neither side led by more than three points. S&T trailed 21-20 before running off three straight points.
Krista Haslag (Linn, Mo./Helias ) tied it with a kill to start the run, and then an attack error gave the Miners the lead and forced the Tritons (4-11, 3-3 GLVC) to take their first timeout. Meyer recorded another kill to push the lead to 23-21. UMSL got back within 23-22, but two kills from Haslag sandwiched around a kill from Haley Brightwell gave the set to S&T.
The second set was tied 9-9 before the Tritons went on an 11-3 run to take its biggest lead of the night at 20-12. The Miners fought back with eight straight points to tie it at 20-all. Meyer started the run with a kill and served seven straight points. Kosmopolis had a couple of kills in the run. UMSL scored three straight after its second timeout to regain the lead at 23-20, but S&T wouldn't quit scoring five straight to win the set. Wright and Mueller recorded back-to-back kills to make it 23-22. A block by Mueller and Kosmopolis tied it at 23-all, and then an error by Corinne Hoekstra set up set point. Another error, this time by Hannah Miller gave the Miners the commanding 2-0 lead.
The third set was close early, before the Tritons pulled away for a 16-10 lead. S&T closed to within 19-15, but couldn't get closer than four the rest of the way as UMSL took the set trimming the Miners lead to 2-1.
The Tritons scored five of the first seven points in the fourth set, but S&T recovered to take a 7-6 lead. UMSL then scored four of the next five to grab a 10-8 advantage. The Miners eventually got tied things up at 11-all and proceeded to trade points with the Tritons. S&T moved ahead 18-16, but UMSL scored two straight to square things back up at 18-all. A stuff block by Haslag and Mueller gave the Miners the lead for good as they scored the final seven points of the set to win 25-18.
S&T finished the match with a hitting percentage of .280 and held the Triton offense to .207
The Miners are back in action on Saturday afternoon taking on Maryville University beginning at 3 p.m.
