Own goal in overtime dooms Miners in setback to UMSL

Box Score ROLLA, Mo. – An own goal in overtime doomed Missouri S&T's soccer team Friday night, as Missouri-St. Louis benefitted from the play to escape with a 1-0 win over the Miners in Great Lakes Valley Conference play.

The Tritons, who have shut out their last five opponents, got a corner kick opportunity just past the midway point of the first overtime period.  Luc Wells sent a ball in front of the Miner net, where it caromed off two S&T defenders and ended up in the goal with exactly six minutes gone in the period to end the game.

S&T had a pair of golden scoring opportunities in the latter stages of the contest, one in regulation time when Peter Vaccaro (Ballwin, Mo./Parkway West )'s header on a corner kick went off the crossbar.  The other came a couple of minutes prior to the goal, as Josh Bennett (St. Charles, Mo./Duchesne) threaded a pass through the UMSL defense that just missed connecting with Kyle Schraier (St. Louis, Mo./Christian Brothers College ) on the opposite end for a redirect and a potential game-ending goal.

The Miners and Tritons (6-2, 5-1 GLVC) had 10 shots apiece in the game.  Both goalkeepers – S&T's Donny Gesell (St. Charles, Mo./St. Charles West) and UMSL's Patrick Ream – had one save apiece as a majority of the shots taken in the game were blocked by defenders.

S&T, who dropped to 4-4-1 overall and 3-4 in the GLVC, will host Maryville Sunday at 2:30 p.m. at the S&T Soccer Field.
