(Rolla, Mo.) - The Missouri S&T volleyball team, winners of seven of its last eight, look to keep its strong play going as it heads out on the road this weekend for a pair of Great Lakes Valley Conference matches against Quincy and Illinois Springfield.
The Miners 7-5, 3-0 in the GLVC will take on Quincy 8-2, 2-1 GLVC at the Pepsi Arena on Friday night in Quincy, Ill. and then on Saturday will travel to Springfield, Ill., for a contest against the UIS Prairie Stars 3-6, 1-2 in league play.
Scouting the Competition
Quincy enters play this week coming off a split in St. Louis last weekend. The Hawks defeated Maryville in five sets on Friday and were then swept at Missouri-St. Louis on Saturday. QU defeated Illinois Springfield 3-0 on Tuesday.
Quincy is hitting 19.8 percent as a team and averaging 12.1 kills/set and have held their opposition to 17.7 percent and are allowing nearly two kills less per set. The Hawks are balanced offensively led by Carly Schmitt with 2.88 kills per set. Briann Joslin and Samantha Haegele aren't far behind averaging 2.16 and 2.28 respectively. Lyndsay Kooi and Courtney O'Brien are the primary setters with O'Brien dishing out 5.34 per set and Kooi has 4.94 per set. Haegele and Damaris Linker are the leaders on the defensive side of the ball with 98 and 94 digs respectively.
The Prairie Stars have been swept in their last two matches.UIS is hitting only 14 percent as a team while averaging 10.4 kills/set. On the de-fensive side of the ball it's allowing its opponents to hit 17.3 percent while giving up 12.2 kills/set. Connor Borgmeier leads the charge offensively averaging 3.55 kills/set. Kellee Mafaffay is second with 2.41 kills/set. Rebeka Pruemer leads the team in set assists averaging 5.86 assists/set while Ashley King leads the way defensively with 3.38 digs/set.
The Series
Friday's match at Quincy will be the ninth meeting all-time between the two schools. The Hawks lead the all-time series 5-3 and 3-1 in Quincy. S&T swept the season se-ries last year sweeping the Hawks in Rolla and downing them in five at Quincy.
Saturday's contest with Illinois Springfield will be the sixth meeting between the two schools with S&T holding a 4-1 lead. The Miners have won four straight in the series. S&T won both meetings last season by 3-0 sweeps. This will be the fourth meeting in Springfield, Ill., where the Miners lead 2-1.
