Box Score ROLLA, Mo. – Taking a cue from Missouri S&T's women's team, the Miner soccer team got on the scoreboard in the first three minutes of the contest Friday night and went on to win for the first time in Great Lakes Valley Conference play with a 2-0 victory over Saint Joseph's at the S&T Soccer Field.
In the opening game of Friday's doubleheader, the S&T women's team scored after only 2:10 had elapsed as it went on to win by a similar 2-0 count. When the men's game got underway, it took only 2:23 for the Miners to take a lead it would hold for the balance of the evening.
Peter Vaccaro (Ballwin, Mo./Parkway West ), with his back to the goal, flipped a pass over his shoulder to an open
Carlos Gomez (Madrid, Spain/Nuestra Sra Del Recurerdo), who buried the shot into the back of the net to put S&T on top. The Miners would continue to control play for much of the early part of the game and would take that 1-0 lead to the half, outshooting the Pumas 7-4 along the way.
Donny Gesell (St. Charles, Mo./St. Charles West) got the start in goal and made a big save on a free kick by Kevin Amaizo at the 19:06 mark to keep S&T in the lead. Gesell made three more saves in the second half to record his first shutout of the season and was also aided when Corey Lesure hit the goalpost with a shot from the wing with just under 17 minutes remaining.
The Miners got an insurance goal with 6:52 to play as they moved the ball up the field and eventually sprung
Gilberto Robayo (Snohomish, Wash./Snohomish) in the middle of the field in a one-on-one battle with goalkeeper Steve Quella; Robayo converted the try to give S&T a two-goal lead for the balance of the evening.
S&T finished with a 15-10 advantage in shots over the Pumas (1-4, 0-3 GLVC) and had three corner kick attempts to one for Saint Joseph's, which came in the final minute of the contest. Friday's game also marked the third consecutive year in which the Miners have shut out the Pumas.
The Miners (2-2-1, 1-2 GLVC) will host Indianapolis at 2:30 p.m. Sunday at the S&T Soccer Field. The Greyhounds dropped a 3-1 decision Friday at Drury to fall to 2-4 overall and 1-2 in GLVC play.
