Miners set to kick off GLVC slate Saturday at McKendree

9/12/2012 4:49:00 PM

ROLLA, Mo. – Missouri S&T's football team will seek to open its first season of Great Lakes Valley Conference play on a winning note this weekend, as the Miners travel to Lebanon, Ill., to face McKendree University in the conference opener for both teams.  Game time is at 6 p.m. at Leemon Field on the McKendree campus.

The Miners bring a 2-0 record into the contest with wins over Oklahoma Panhandle State and Arkansas Tech.   S&T beat Arkansas Tech 27-19 last Thursday, getting a 31-of-38 passing performance from Josh Firm (Lancaster, Calif./Quartz Hill) to earn him the GLVC's “Offensive Player of the Week” award.   In addition, the Miner defense intercepted five passes in the victory with four of them coming in the second half.

McKendree is looking for its first victory of the 2012 campaign Saturday as it is coming off a 47-24 home loss to Henderson State Saturday.  The Bearcats had a 17-7 lead in that game midway through the first half before the Reddies scored 40 consecutive points, largely through a passing game that accumulated 475 yards and seven touchdowns.  McKendree's defense, led by free safety Jamison Wilson – the GLVC's “Defensive Player of the Week” – has returned an interception for a touchdown in each of its first two games.

The Miners and Bearcats are meeting for the first time since 1936; S&T has won eight of the previous nine matchups.
