Miners upset bid at #8 Central Missouri comes up short

Box Score (Warrensburg, Mo.) - Looking for its biggest win in school history the Missouri S&T Miners came up short in its upset bid at eighth ranked Central Missouri on Tuesday night. S&T gave the Jennies a tough battle, but the Jens made the plays down the stretch which turned out to be the difference in its 3-0 (27-29, 23-25, 23-25)loss at the Central Missouri Multipurpose Building.

The Miners (4-5) trailed by as many as five in the opening but come back to take a 24-22 lead late in the set and had a two set point lead. UCM (6-3) came back to tie the match at 24 on a kill by Aubri Renshaw, but S&T regained the lead on a kill from Krista Haslag (Linn, Mo./Helias ) to set up another set point. Hillary McCormick tied it again at 25, but once again the Miners had an answer as Kelly Kosmopolis (O'Fallon, Ill./O'Fallon Township) recorded a kill to make it 26-25. Afte a UCM block tied it 26-26, Julie Meyer (Marthasville, Mo./St. Francis Borgia) gave S&T the lead back with a kill but the Jennies scored the final three points to take set one 29-27.

The Miners hit 33.3 percent in the opening set, but the Jens were slightly better at 42.5 percent. Both sides had 20 kills but Central Missouri committed two fewer attack errors.

S&T trailed by as many as seven in the second set at 16-9 before going on an 8-1 run to tie things up at 17-all on a kill from Meyer. The Jens rattled off the next three points to retake the lead at 20-17, but S&T regrouped scoring three of the next four points to close within 21-20. UCM stretched the lead back out to 24-21 before the Miners cut it to one with back-to-back points on an assisted block from Haslag and Torrie Rupe (Wichita, Kan./Collegiate) and a kill from Haslag. The Jens took the set though on an attack error to take the 25-23 win.

The offenses struggled a little more in set two as S&T hit just 9.8 percent while the Jennies hit 14.3 percent.

In the third set, the Miners led by as many as four early but UCM responded with a 7-3 run to tie the set at 15-all. The two sides traded points before the Jens went on a run to take a 21-18 lead. That lead grew to 24-20, but S&T staved off three match points but couldn't hold off a fourth as Renshaw ended a long rally with a kill to end it at 25-23.

Meyer and Haslag combined to lead the Miners with 14 and 13 kills respectively. Hayley Wright (Omaha, Neb./Millard West) added eight more. S&T hit 15.2 percent as a team and finished with 44 kills two more than Central Missouri.

UCM hit 19.5 percent for the match and was led by Bradye Peniston and Carly Sojka with 11 and 10 kills respectively.

The Miners will back at home on Friday night when they host William Jewell to open GLVC play beginning at 7 p.m.
