ROLLA, Mo. – Missouri S&T has added to its impressive list of Capital One Academic All-America selections as two members of the men's soccer team were named today to this year's squad for NCAA Division II.
Senior defenders
Adam Stensland (Edwardsville, Ill./Edwardsville) and
Caleb Collier (Springfield, Mo./Kickapoo) were selected to the All-America squad for their work in the classroom, which are afforded to student-athletes with at least a 3.3 cumulative grade point average at their institution as well as for their play on the field. Stensland was named to the second team, while Collier was a third team choice.
Stensland, a nuclear engineering major, scored his only goal of the season early in the second half to break a scoreless tie in the Miners' Sept. 30 victory over Maryville and he also added two assists, while Collier, a mechanical engineering major, assisted on two goals as well.
The duo was part of a Miner defensive unit held its opponents to just 13 goals in 16 games this season as S&T posted nine shutouts and the fifth-best save percentage in the NCAA Division II ranks.
Stensland and Collier, the fifth and sixth members of the S&T men's soccer program to earn Academic All-America honors, were among four Miners named to the academic all-district team earlier this month; Collier was also an all-district selection in 2011. With their selections to the Capital One Academic All-America team, Missouri S&T now has 42 such selections since 2000, the fifth-highest total in NCAA Division II in that span.
Missouri S&T finished the 2012 season with an overall record of 8-6-2 and was 7-6-1 in GLVC play.
