Miner swimmers sweep top finishes to defeat Delta State

ROLLA, Mo. – Missouri S&T's swimming team opened its home schedule Friday evening by posting the top time in all 11 events, rolling to a 128-74 victory over Delta State at the S&T Pool.

A win by seven seconds in the opening event of the night – the 400-yard medley relay – got the Miners on their way to the win, as S&T had the top two finishers in five events and three more races in which it swept the top three spots.

Nine different Miner competitors had the best mark in individual events Friday evening.   Ethan Goldfarb (Arlington, Texas/The Oakridge School) won the 1,000-yard freestyle in 9:52.57, Luke Norris (The Woodlands, Texas/The Woodlands) captured first in the 200-freestyle in 1:44.32, Danylo Mykhailov (Khankiv, Ukraine/Sport Collegue N.S.) won the 50-yard freestyle in 21.46 seconds and Andrew Schranck (Alton, Ill./Marquette Catholic) took first in the 200-yard individual medley in 1:54.63 before the first break in the action.

That was followed by victories from Ryan Gibson (Jackson, Mo./Jackson) in the 200-butterfly in 1:58.15, Jacob Dole (Corbin, Ky./Country Day School) in the 100-yard freestyle in 46.62 – edging teammate Aljaz Kerc (Ljubljana, Slovenia/Gimnazija Bezigrad) by 0.02 seconds – Nate Kamrath (Newburgh, Ind./Castle) in the 200-backstroke in 1:56.48, Matt Welsh (Wildwood, Mo./Lafayette) in the 500-freestyle in 4:47.90 and Kerc in the 200-breaststroke in 2:06.68.

In the relays, the team of Kamrath, Kerc, Schranck and Jacob Dole (Corbin, Ky./Country Day School) won the 400-medley relay in 3:27.10, while the quartet of Schranck, Mykailov, Keith Sponsler (Lincoln, Neb./Lincoln East) and Dole posted the fastest time in the 400-freestyle relay of 3:08.26.

Second place finishes came from Kerc in the 100-freestyle, Ryan Layne (Houston, Texas/Cypress Creek) in the 1,000-free in 10:06.06 and 200-butterfly in 1:58.96, Matt Zieger (St. Joseph, Mo./Central) in the 200-freestyle in 1:48.14, Sponsler in the 50-freestyle in 22.27, Sasha Stadnik (Overland Park, Kan./Blue Valley West) in the 500-yard freestyle in 4:54.44 and Goldfarb in the 200-breaststroke in 2:10.07.

S&T's second 400-free relay team of Matt Zieger (St. Joseph, Mo./Central), Norris, Layne and Stadnik had the second-best time of 3:11.44, while the 400-medley team of Luis Nesrala (Santo Domingo, D.R./Colegio Amador), Andrew Simek (O'Fallon, Mo./Fort Zumwalt West), Gibson and Alfredo Martinez (Mexico City, Mexico/Instituto Cumbres San Javier) placed third in 3:37.88.

The Miners had third place showings from Chris Stockman in the 200-freestyle in 1:48.21, Kamrath in the 200-IM in 2:00.36, Nesrala in the 200-backstroke in 2:00.29 and Drew Larkins (Chesterfield, Mo./Parkway Central) in the 200-yard breaststroke with a mark of 2:14.06.

The Miners will compete again Saturday as they travel to Kirksville, Mo., to face Truman State at 1 p.m.
