Box Score (Rolla, Mo.) – The Missouri S&T Miners won its ninth straight match and 14
th in a row at home sweeping past Lewis
3-0 (25-20, 25-18, 25-14) on Sunday afternoon. The Miners and Indianapolis remain the two lone unbeaten teams in Great Lakes Valley Conference action at 9-0.
The opening set was tied 9-9 before S&T (13-5, 9-0 GLVC) pulled away with a 9-3 spurt to take control at 18-12. The Flyers (12-6, 7-2 GLVC) fought back to within 19-17, but the Miners won five of the next seven points to set up match point on a kill by
Julie Meyer (Marthasville, Mo./St. Francis Borgia). After a kill by Cassidy Parsons made it 24-20, a bad set by Leigh Barea on the next point gave the set to S&T 25-20. The Miners had 13 kills in the opening frame to 11 for Lewis. S&T hit .152 percent while holding the Flyer offense to .087 percent.
Lewis took an early 2-1 lead in set two, but the Miner attack got going scoring 10 of the next 12 points to move in front 11-4. S&T didn't allow the Flyers to get closer than three points the rest of the set as it led by as many as nine points before settling for the 25-18 win.
Krista Haslag (Linn, Mo./Helias ) had seven kills in the stanza while
Hayley Wright (Omaha, Neb./Millard West) added five more. The Miners hit .304 percent in the frame while Lewis hit .231 percent.
The third set was all S&T as it scored the first 10 points and didn't look back. The Miners led by as many as 13 points in the set before winning it 25-14. S&T had only 11 kills in the frame but took advantage of 10 attack errors and two service errors by the Flyers.
The Miners finished the match hitting .250 percent and was led by Haslag and Wright with 11 kills each.
Kelly Kosmopolis (O'Fallon, Ill./O'Fallon Township) contributed nine to the attack while Meyer finished with seven.
Jennifer Costello (St. Louis, Mo./Parkway South ) dished out 29 assists while
Jocelyn DeMotte (Topeka, Kan./Hayden) had 20 digs.
Lewis, who received votes in this week's AVCA Top 25 poll, finished the contest hitting .091 percent and was led by Carly Perschnick and Jen Krumwiede with nine kills apiece. Barea dished out 23 assists while Mary Carroll finished with 16 digs.
S&T is back in action next Friday when it travels to Aurora, Ill., for the fifth annual GLVC/GLIAC Crossover Tournament. The Miners will play three matches and the pairings and match times will be announced on Monday morning.
