Box Score LEBANON, Ill. – Missouri S&T picked up a critical road victory in Great Lakes Valley Conference play Friday night, as
Timmy Kenny (Wildwood, Mo./Lafayette)'s goal with just over five minutes remaining gave the Miners a
1-0 win over McKendree University.
The Miners, who entered the game right behind the host Bearcats in the GLVC standings, moved the ball into McKendree's end of the field moments after the Bearcats missed a scoring opportunity when a pass went through right in front of the S&T net.
Peter Haw (Ballwin, Mo./Parkway West ) played a pass from the wing over to Kenny, who redirected the ball from about 18 yards away past Bearcat goalkeeper Scott Armistead for the only goal of the contest.
McKendree had a couple of late chances, but S&T goalie
Matt Jackson (Iowa City, Iowa/Iowa City West) turned one of them away and the other, a shot by Kavel Smith, was blocked by the Miner defense.
In the opening half, the best scoring chance came when McKendree's Kavel Smith was stopped at point blank range by Jackson at the 27-minute mark. The Miners missed a good opportunity a little over four minutes later when
Jervis Atagana (Columbia, Mo./Hickman )'s head ball was turned away by Armistead.
S&T had two more chances to grab the lead prior to Kenny's goal, as
Spencer Brinkmeyer (Kansas City, Mo./Oak Park)'s header on a free kick was stopped, then the Miners were unable to capitalize on a corner kick with eight minutes remaining.
The Bearcats had 18 shots to the Miners' 11, including nine on goal to six for S&T. Jackson recorded eight saves to pick up his fourth shutout of the season.
The Miners, 6-4-1 overall and above the .500 mark in GLVC play for the first time this season at 5-4, will remain on the road to take on Bellarmine Sunday at 1:30 p.m. (Central time). The Knights, who entered the night in third place in the league standings, played to a 1-1 tie Friday with Drury.
