Balanced attack leads Miners to 3-2 win over Missouri-St. Louis

Box Score (Rolla, Mo.) – The Missouri S&T Miner volleyball squad got a balanced offensive effort in its 3-2 (23-25, 25-13, 25-19, 21-25, 15-9) win over Missouri-St. Louis on Saturday. The Miners had five players reach double figures in kills led by Hayley Wright (Omaha, Neb./Millard West)'s career-high 17 kills.

The Tritons (10-15, 7-6 GLVC) had leads of 7-3 and 10-6 in the first set before S&T (16-10, 12-1 GLVC) rallied back to tie it at 12-12. UMSL would take an 18-15 lead only to watch the Miners rally to tie it at 21-all. Krista Haslag (Linn, Mo./Helias ) gave the Miners a 22-21 lead, but UMSL answered with three of the last four points to win the opener 25-23. S&T had 17 kills in the stanza, hit .205 percent, but committed eight errors. Wright and Haslag had four kills each in the set.

The second set was all S&T. It raced out to a 10-3 lead and was never headed in the frame. The lead grew to 12 points on three different occasions before settling on the 25-13 final. The Miners hit .400 in the set and had 15 kills against three errors. Haslag had four kills while Torrie Rupe (Wichita, Kan./Collegiate) added three more. Four other players added two each.

The third set was tightly contested at 10-all before the Tritons ran off back-to-back points to take a 12-10 advantage. S&T answered with five straight to regain the lead at 15-12. UMSL closed to within 15-14 on a service ace by Haley Woods. The Miners pushed the lead to four points by scoring four of the next five to go up 19-15. The Tritons would close to within 21-18 before S&T closed out the set on a 4-1 run to win 25-19. The Miners had 18 kills against one error in the third set and hit .370 percent. Wright led the way with six kills while four players had three kills apiece.

The fourth set was the tightest of the match. It saw 13 ties and five lead changes. S&T led 15-13 at the midway point before Missouri-St. Louis used a 7-3 run to move in front 20-18. The Miners tied the set at 21-all on an attack error by Liz Jaeger, but he Tritons would win the set scoring the last four points. S&T recorded 15 kills in the set, but committed nine errors to finish with .170 hitting percentage while UMSL hit .225 percent in the set.

In the final set the Miners raced out to a 6-1 lead and wouldn't look back. They led 10-3, but saw the Tritons get back to within 12-9. S&T finished strong scoring the last three points finishing the match off on a kill by Julie Meyer (Marthasville, Mo./St. Francis Borgia). The Miners hit .240 percent in the final set and had nine kills. Meyer led the way with three of those.

S&T finished the match with 74 kills in 191 swings and hit .262 percent for the match. Joining Wright in double figures was Haslag with 15, Meyer had 14, Kelly Kosmopolis (O'Fallon, Ill./O'Fallon Township) had 11 and Alison Mueller (Bartelso, Ill./Mater Dei ) finished with 10. Meyer became the second player in school history to record 1,000 career kills. Jennifer Costello (St. Louis, Mo./Parkway South ) had 56 assists and 16 digs. Jocelyn DeMotte (Topeka, Kan./Hayden) led the way with 37 digs. Meyer finished with 18 digs while Jennifer Kegler (Ballwin, Mo./Cor Jesu Academy) had 13 digs.

UMSL had 55 kills in the contest in 199 swings and finished the match hitting .141 percent. Jaeger had 19 kills to lead the way. Woods contributed 13 kills while Haley Brightwell added 11 more. Lindsay Meyer dished out 42 assists and Jennie Manis had 33 digs.

The Miners hit the road next week for three road matches beginning Tuesday evening when they travel to Springfield, Mo., to take on Drury at 7 p.m.
