Box Score LIBERTY, Mo. – After playing to a scoreless tie for better than 80 minutes Friday night, William Jewell scored two goals in a span of four minutes to take a
2-0 decision from Missouri S&T as the Miners started a challenging stretch of the schedule to close the regular season.
The Miners and Cardinals played on even terms until Chris Binns broke the draw with an unassisted goal with 9:32 remaining in regulation time. A shade under four minutes later, Shane Bowlen added to the William Jewell lead with a goal off an assist from Forrest McCurren.
S&T had some scoring chances just prior to Binn's goal, as
Adam Stensland (Edwardsville, Ill./Edwardsville) hit a shot over the top of the net at the 76:40 mark and
Peter Haw (Ballwin, Mo./Parkway West ) missed wide of the goal about a minute prior to the goal.
William Jewell (11-4, 9-4 GLVC) outshot the Miners by a 17-10 margin for the game and had six shots on goal to S&T's four.
Matt Jackson (Iowa City, Iowa/Iowa City West), who entered the game ranked first in NCAA Division II for goals against average and save percentage, made four saves in the contest.
The Miners (7-5-2, 6-5-1 GLVC) will host No. 16-ranked Rockhurst in their final home game of the season Sunday at 2:30 p.m. at the S&T Soccer Field; Senior Day ceremonies will take place after the conclusion of the women's game between S&T and Rockhurst that begins at noon.
Rockhurst took over first place in the GLVC standings Friday with a 1-0 home victory over No. 5-ranked Drury, who the Miners will face in Springfield, Mo., Wednesday to end the regular season. S&T currently stands in eighth place in the conference standings and the top eight teams will qualify for the GLVC Tournament.
